With 2018 ending, it’s time to start thinking about what tech and media will look like in 2019. The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is the first major event of the the year and it sets the tone for the next year of innovation. This year, the event will focus on topics like mobility, future interfaces, 5G, augmented and virtual realities, esports and sports technology, etc. The through-line between all of these topics is Artificial Intelligence. In fact, the underlying theme of this year’s CES is essentially the increased effect that AI will have in consumer’s daily lives. Everything is about to get very personal.

Audi and Disney Collaborate on New Type of Media Headed to CES

By Chris Paukert from CNET

When cars become fully autonomous, our entire in-car experience will change. Since we won’t have to be focused on the road, our attention during our commutes is up for grabs. Audi believes that the future in-car experience will be all about immersive entertainment, which is why they have partnered with Disney to create this new type of media. The windshield as an interface has been discussed for a while now (we wrote about it back in 2016), so while the concept isn’t new, the interpretation is. Their concept car will be on display at CES, but it’s safe to say that it will not be on the road anytime soon.

Bosch’s CES-Bound Shuttle Concept Takes Us on a Trip to a Not-Too-Distant Future

By Ronan Glon from Digital Trends

German components manufacturing company Bosch wants to tell automakers how to run their autonomous vehicles. They don’t want to actually create these vehicles, so instead, they are creating software that will control the vehicles. They are building two types of interfaces: 1) a platform to connect users and vehicles and 2) a system where the car can monitor itself. Bosch’s goal is to get their software into every autonomous vehicle on the road, which is interesting considering that every car company is trying to create their own software ecosystem for these cars. However, Bosch is focusing specifically on autonomous shuttles, so there could be room for them in this lane.

There will also be air taxis, ubiquitous 3D printers, and artificial intelligence galore. Moreover, it will all be sustainable, which is really their key selling point. This is ultimately a “what if” project to explore the technological advancements of the near future, but there are definitely some interesting ideas to consider here.

The Future is Smart: Taiwan’s Most Innovative Companies to Unveil Transformative AIoT Products at CES 2019

From AP News

A handful of Taiwanese companies will be showcasing their AI-infused connected devices at CES this year. In particular, CyberLink will be showing their ready-to-use facial recognition engine. Perceptual user interfaces like facial recognition started to really become mainstream at the end of 2017 thanks to platforms like Apple’s FaceID. They are slowly gaining momentum as AI-integrated smart devices (AIoT) become more universal. It will be interesting to see how companies like CyberLink imagine these interfaces in industries like retail, security, and work.

A Sneak Peek At CES 2019: Same Footprint, More Technology Startups, New Resilience Area

By Jean Baptiste Su from Forbes

CES had a preview back in November where they announced that a major focus of the event will be what they call “resilience.” This is essentially how technology can be used for social good. This topic has become very important for many consumers lately, so it’s good that CES has incorporated it into the entire event. There is also a huge opportunity for startups, with more than 1,200 fledgling companies from over 40 countries exhibiting this year.
