This week we discovered what the future holds – the future of transportation, sports, homes, social media, and devices, that is. Let’s just say that if you think we’re connected now, you ain’t seen nothing yet.

Here are the top articles from this week:

1. Autonomous driving is here, and it’s going to change everything

Three trends have paved the way for autonomous driving: computer vision, ride-sharing, and electrification. With these trends in mind, the future of car travel will be a fully connected and public space. There is also reason to believe that entirely new markets will emerge from this driving situation.

2. Hoops 2.0: Inside the NBA’s Data-Driven Revolution

Remember the days when we could only rank ball players based on the number of assists they made or their shooting percentage? Gone are those days. Indeed, we’ll soon be able start rating them based on finer details like dribbles per possession and miles ran per half. What’s best though, is how this case study highlights concept development and implementation.

3. Ads for voice assistants are here and they’re already terrible

Smart hubs are the next interface, which means they are the next ad platform, as well. While the first few ad attempts were not very well received, experts say that future brand opportunities lie in providing information when the users ask for it — native advertising at its best.

4. Facebook is building brain-computer interfaces for typing and skin-hearing

In probably the most extreme version of connectivity, Facebook has announced plans to roll out brain-computer interface hardware. In partnership with UC San Francisco, UC Berkeley, Johns Hopkins Medicine, Johns Hopkins University’s Applied Physics Laboratory and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Facebook is looking for a “non-intrusive” way to read your thoughts.

5. The 10-Year Quest to Make Your Phone Do Everything

Imagine a world with total device integration and personalization. Imagine that you play a movie on your TV and your digital assistant suggests a dinner recipe to go with that movie that it knows you’ll like. Thanks to AI, this fantasy will soon be a reality.
