E3 2018

Our team went to E3 2018 to check out what’s new and exciting in the gaming space. E3 is the biggest event in video games where companies announce new content, tech, and business innovations. Traditional players like Sony and Microsoft showcased new games with beautiful (albeit gory) graphics, but Nintendo really stole the show with their new Switch strategy. Facebook made their debut FB.GG appearance with mixed results and the whole event definitely had a Fortnite undertone. All in all, gaming is still in need of major disruption, but the current progress is promising.

How Nintendo Regained Its Footing with The Switch and Smartphones

By Brian Heater from TechCrunch

Before this year, Nintendo was struggling. Their previous device, the Wii U, was a massive flop because it was stuck in the past. However, thanks to the Nintendo Switch, the company is thriving and earning a new audience. The mobility and versatility of the Switch device is enough to lure an older audience of more casual gamers, but Nintendo is also being less rigid about mature content from third parties. These announcements indicate a shift towards a more open, cross-platform Nintendo, and everyone is for it.

How Fortnite Is Transforming the Gaming Industry

By Nick Statt from The Verge

Fortnite is by far the most well-represented franchise at E3 this year and for a good reason. Fortnite is less than a year old and already has 125 million players. It is forcing studios and publishers to rethink how games are developed, monetized, and updated over time. Plus, they had a live e-sports demonstration with 100 players battling against each other. It’s the first time a game has done a tournament like this and based on the success, we can expect to see more like it.

It’s Game On As Facebook Takes On Twitch And YouTube For Live-Streaming Primacy

By David Bloom from Tubefilter

FB.GG had its first official booth at E3 this week. Last week, Facebook announced FB.GG, its new gaming platform to compete with Google’s YouTube Gaming and Amazon’s Twitch. Facebook has been known to enter new spaces in this way. They show up late to the party without an apparent strategy beyond building a competing product. They always seem to think that their 2.2 billion Facebook users will jumpstart every new venture. It’s obviously too early to tell if the platform will be successful, but they’re already a few years behind the other GAFA members.

The 13 Biggest Announcements from E3 2018

By Dave Smith from Business Insider

For a quick recap of the event, you should read this article. Business Insider put together a comprehensive list of highlights of new titles, platforms, and gameplay that the major companies announced. What stood out to us in particular is the lack of hardware announcements. There is a trend emerging where games are no longer tied to specific devices. This has already happened in other forms of media and entertainment, so it’s only a matter of time for gaming as well.
