A bunch of random reviews of the different movies I watched over break. Written by Rex E. ‘25

Basic Overview: This will basically just be an overview of some the different movies I watched, not counting, the Mystery Science Theater 3000 episodes since I watched their Turkey Day marathon, the Patrick Swayze marathon they do every year, and the New Year’s marathon, along with episodes completely separate from those live streams, because if I did, this would be a hundred pages long. It will be different to my reviews- I’m just going to say the name of the movie, a sentence or two about it, and if you should check it out. Some of these might get a full review outside of this and some won’t.

Movies:

  • The Family Plan: An ex-C.IA. agent takes his family on a vacation so they cannot figure out that people are after him and his previous life. Standard film for kids, nothing much for adults. Turn this on for a three-year-old to look up from CoComelon.
  • Spirited: A musical that puts a spin on a Christmas carol where they are a big organization that once a year works to redeem a person focusing on the ghost of Christmas present and the CEO they are trying to redeem. This a pretty fun flick with a lot of charm from Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell along with impressive music sequences. Check it out.
  • The Marvels: Your standard Marvel flick. Ms. Marvel is fun but outside of that, there is nothing spectacular. See it if you want to but it isn’t a must see.
  • Godzilla Minus One: A reimagining of the original 1954 classic, this is arguably the best film of the year and can be debated for best Godzilla film. This isn’t a you should see it; this is a you must see it.
  • The Boys In The Boat: Based on the true events of how the junior rowing team from Washington College won the 1936 Olympics. This is a standard sports movie. Check it out if you’re interested, but for me the best sports film based on true events is still Air Bud (1997).
  • Animaniacs: Wakko’s Wish: A parody of Disney movies, this is a fun comedy made for a pretty fun birthday. Check it out.
  • Velocipastor: A priest turns into a dinosaur. You must watch this.
  • At the Earth’s Core: Based on my favorite book about an underground world of prehistoric monsters and cavemen ruled by psychic pterodactyls. Fun watch with friends. Check it out.
  • Planet of the Apes: A science fiction classic. The makeup is incredible with a great metaphor about hatred. Unless if you study black holes and think metaphors or allegories are bad, you must check it out.
  • Dinosaurus: When a two dinosaurs and a caveman wash up on the shore of an island. A boy befriends the apatosaurus and caveman while the t.rex causes chaos. Fun to mock with friends.
  • The Time Machine: Based on the classic HG Well novel, a Victorian scientist creates a time machine that explores the future and finds a paradise that isn’t as great as it seems. This a classic with groundbreaking effects. Check it out.
  • King Kong vs. Godzilla (1964): The first true Kaiju brawl between the most famous film giants in the world, this film is enjoyable and has some funny commentary on capitalism. Just remember Tokusatsu is meant to look fun with realism. Better than the remake- check it out.
  • Nope: Another horror film by Jordan Peele based around the trope of an alien invader. This is my personal favorite of his horror movies, but I have still yet to see Us. Check it out.
  • Rear Window: A classic made by Alfred Hitchcock with the idea of seeing a murder across the street. It has some great suspense and is a high-end classic. Check it out.
  • The Giant Behemoth: With special effects by King Kong creator Willis O’Brien, the film takes forever to get to the monster and you’d be better off just watching the monster scenes on YouTube.
  • Green Slime: With cheesy rubber monsters, a catchy theme song, and some retro-futuristic sets, the Green Slime is a good choice to watch with friends.
  • Mothra: The first introduction to Toho’s 2nd most famous kaiju is a fun watch. Just remember what I said with King Kong vs. Godzilla. Check it out.
  • This Is Spinal Tap: A classic comedy that parodies rock bands and documentaries. It would have a large influence on pop culture, even creating the mockumentary genre. Check it out.
  • Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon: One of the greatest martial arts films of all time. There is nothing left for me to say other than to check it out.
  • Mighty Joe Young (1949): Created by a lot of people who worked and starred in the original 1933 classic King Kong, this film has another giant ape but isn’t just a repeat; instead it is about a nightclub court case all based around Joe. The drama is incredible and the effects by Ray Harryhausen and Willis O’Brien are even better. Check it out.
  • Sisu: An old man finds gold in World War 2 and has to travel a ton by horseback to get to a bank, then murders Nazis; it’s awesome, so check it out.
