Director: Jim Henson, Frank Oz

Cast: Jim Henson, Frank OZ

Summary: Kermit, Fozzie, and the rest of the Muppets gang visit Fozzie’s mom for Christmas without knowing she originally planned to go on vacation and rent it out to Doc and his dog, Sprocket, from Fraggle Rock. Eventually, the Sesame Street gang joins in the fun. There is a brief scene with some Fraggles and even the Muppet babies while Kermit worries about Piggy arriving through a harsh winter storm.

Analysis:

If my review of A Muppets Family Christmas sounds messy or like there isn’t much of a plot, that is because there isn’t. This 1987 Holiday special is one of (if not) the biggest Muppets crossover in history with the Fraggles, Sesame Street, Muppet babies, and of course the main Muppet group of Kermit and Fozzie and the gang.

It is very light on plot with it mostly just being a scene with a few jokes followed by a Christmas song- rinse and repeat. Occasionally you’ll get a short scene of Kermit worrying about Ms. Piggy as she drives from a city to Fozzie’s mom’s barn as a snowstorm rages through the countryside, which adds some drama but nothing too much.

Despite the lack of plot, there is still quite a lot to enjoy with there being several well-sung Christmas carols, which allows this to be something that works both as simple background music and as something worth sitting down and watching. There are a few highlights such as Fozzie building a snowman that comes to life, the scene with the Muppet babies, and heck even a pretty sweet scene between Swedish Chef and Big Bird. I know this isn’t the most detailed review but it also isn’t the most detailed special. It’s just a really sweet, funny, nice special that I highly recommend checking out around the holiday season. I hope you all have a great break and a Merry Christmas.
