On November 14th, the SJND high school girls varsity soccer team had their first game. They went up against Tennyson High School. Tennyson High School is located in Hayward. It was an immensely important game for the team. This was the start to a new season!

Starting players were Mariah Pulido (Senior), Andrea Guzman (Sophomore), Olivia Villarete-Minor (Junior), Ariane Mendez (Junior), Rylie Griffin (Sophomore), Giana Henneman (Freshman), Luisa Barrantes (Senior), Daniela Lopez (Sophomore), Alexis Dollar (Senior), Maia Johns (Senior), and lastly Kaitlin Amaro (Senior) as goalie.

The game first started out a little shaky but after about 10 minutes they soon started playing as a hardworking team. Tennyson High School had scored the first goal but not too long after SJND scored the next goal. Tenth grader Andrea Guzman #14 scored in the first half. Andrea’s goal made everyone’s motivation go up because we were now tied with Tennyson. Unfortunately Tennyson scored another goal in the first half so it was now 2–1.

During half time, the girls were motivating and helping one another on what they needed to do correctly. Later when half time was over and the game resumed, the SJND girl soccer team was working ten times harder. You could tell that they wanted a victory very badly but sadly, Tennyson scored 3 other goals. So the game was now 5–1 and it soon ended that way.

Although the girls lost, they never gave up and continued to try harder every time. I believe it was a good game. Both teams were playing fair, but I have to admit that I think SJND should have won that because they completely deserved it. The amount of hard work they put into it was amazing for their first game together. I couldn’t be more proud of them because they gave all their effort into it.

I interviewed Andrea Guzman to ask her how she thinks the game went and she also thinks the game went pretty well for their first game, the score not so much, but the effort they gave was good. Then I asked her how she felt about scoring, and she said, “I feel pretty good about it because it was the only goal scored.” I’m glad Andrea felt good about it because it was an amazing goal and Andrea played amazing and she deserved that.

Playing well is a good way to start the season. We are looking forward to continuing to play like this; hopefully we win the next game and play amazing again.

On Monday November 27th, the team defeated Salesian College Prep by a score of 3–1 to even up their record to 1–1 on the new season.
