Tennessee, Sewing, and Teaching: Let’s Meet Mr. Calvin
Written by Zackary B. ‘27
Mr. Calvin is a new science and physics teacher here at SJND. One thing about Mr. Calvin is that he was born and raised in Tennessee. Some things he says about Tennessee is that the people there are much nicer. He states that in the South there is something known as Southern hospitality. Southern hospitality is the idea that Southerners are very welcoming and friendly. Mr. Calvin also says how the food in Tennessee is better and much more diverse. The last thing he says about Tennessee is that he misses his friends and family. He says that sometimes he feels the weight of his loneliness but also states, “Sometimes absence is necessary for growth.”
Mr. Calvin not only works at SJND but also owns his own business. He owns a sewing company that he is very compassionate about. For more than ten years he has worked on his business and he says it’s one of the most satisfying things in his life. He states, “Me teaching is a calling that I am satisfying of God, and me in business is a calling and satisfaction for myself.”
How Mr. Calvin keeps up with all of his work is discipline. He lives by a quote by the actor and activist Denzel Washington: “Without commitment, you’ll never start; without consistency, you’ll never finish.”
Mr. Calvin gives advice to students who might be stressed with their own work or problems: if you are stressed, you lack the knowledge necessary to complete that task. He also says that being confident will help you get over that stress.
