The Auteur Web: An Ode to Wes Anderson

Not too long ago, I found myself deep in the cinematic world of Wes Anderson, courtesy of a local film class. Our journey encompassed the debut charm of Bottle Rocket, the youthful romance of Moonrise Kingdom, the lost exploration of Darjeeling Limited, and even a couple of non-Anderson masterpieces — Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and A Woman Is A Woman.

The central theme of our discussions revolved around the Auteur Theory, a concept birthed by the French New Wave. This theory places the director as an artist in their own right, an author of the film rather than a mere executor of the script. It’s an idea that stands in stark contrast to the glitz of big Hollywood studios like Universal Pictures or the allure of silver screen legends like Marlon Brando driving the film. And who better to exemplify Auteur Theory than Wes Anderson himself, whose signature style is so distinctive, it permeates the internet in the form of countless memes.

What particularly intrigued me during this cinematic exploration was the immense creative authority that auteur directors wield over their films — a level of control that seems increasingly elusive in today’s digital creation landscape. Our imaginations are often confined by the rigid parameters set by web platforms — the dimensions of our photos, the length of our videos, even the types of files we upload. We are, in essence, living in a world dominated by square photos and vertical videos — an environment that feels frustratingly sterile.

In previous conversations, I’ve touched on how NFTs have shattered these creative constraints, enabling us to explore content beyond the limitations imposed by web platforms. The emergence of the Auteur Web, as I like to call it, marks a thrilling new era in digital creation, one where the creator’s vision defines the content rather than the platform it sits on. As Generative AI continues to gain momentum, we are witnessing an acceleration of this Auteur Web, where an increasing number of creators are able to craft unique digital experiences, no longer bound by conventional methods and fueled by the novel capabilities AI brings to the table.

Scarlett Johansson in Asteroid City

Inspired by all these insights, I decided to embark on my own creative journey — the creation of a website that bears my unique imprint, flaws and all. Drawing from Wes Anderson’s latest cinematic marvel, Asteroid City, I aspired to design a website that encapsulates a snapshot of life — two individuals engrossed in conversation from their respective windows, reminiscent of the poignant interactions between Scarlett Johansson and Jason Schwartzman in the film. The compelling framing and the raw simplicity of their dialogue sparked an idea — something I was confident I could emulate with the help of ChatGPT, Midjourney, Eleven Labs, and Pinata.

And so I did.
