On a joint event between Soroptomist International Pines City under SI-NCLD, National Police Commission, and CARTC, women from two offbeat generations and occupations displayed their artistry in illustrating their awareness in today’s social and political issues.

The event, being an on-the-spot poster making contest, made a difference from the current rants on the social media platforms, and instead through the creativity of wordless art.

Having the theme: “Kababaihan, sama-samang makilalam upang krimen at korapsyon ay hadlangan [Womanhood, together we stand to hinder crime and corruption]”, diversity in ideologies began appearing in the works of each contestant.

The contest was divided into two categories: one for high school students, and one for the policewomen of Baguio City.

Artists from both categories created their masterpieces based on their own personal knowledge on the social issues mentioned in the theme. Each having their own style of inculcating their experiences and emotions in their work.

One of the sponsors of the event said: “You can really see the difference in their art. I mean look at the works of the millennials, compared to their elders their works are more appealing, but look closely, you’ll see that those works are almost generic. These are the thoughts and ideas you see in social media. But on the other hand, those works created by the older generation has a more powerful voice…”

Another sponsor said:

“There’s no doubt that the ones of the left are more beautiful in nature, but those on the right have stronger meanings in it”.

One of the contestants when asked about her thoughts of the other contestants, said:

“Lahat po maganda. Actually, pag tinignan niyo po nang matagal may deeper meaning sila. Yon po! Nakakabilib lang. [Everything is beautiful. Actually, if you look at it longer, you’ll see that there’s a deeper meaning behind them. I’m just amazed!]”.

While almost everyone agrees that all posters, whether made by a high school student or a policewoman, have been creatively made superb. There is an undeniable difference in the level of impact that their art can create.

EXPERIENCE IN THE YEARS

Looking at the works of the high school students, it seemed to be ‘cleaner’ in both context and display. In fact, the younger the contestant, the more toned-down the poster becomes.

On the other hand, the posters created by the adults had a more direct way of communicating to the audience.

“The kids were drew what they knew about the society. Most likely their thoughts were influenced by social media. The policewomen their job. That’s what they do, fight crime. It’s basically their life”.

Said by one of the organizers.

SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCE

Most of the youth today doesn't even watch the news, but that doesn't hinder them from knowing what are happening around them.

Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram…

These are just a few of the common social media platforms that serve as the daily newspapers.

But despite the low credibility that an online news material has, the engagement of the youth in voicing out their opinions is very blunt.

And these thoughts have somehow found themselves in the modern culture of art.

Although, despite the visible gap, its obvious to all that the goal of that event was achieved, and a single voice prevailed from their variety of thoughts.

The voice of peace.
