I’m a sucker for interviews with famous people. I enjoy reading and listening to their stories of success, and their views on life, health, fitness, etc.

Perhaps, it’s the desire to learn more about how they got to where they did, and even imbibe some of their positive qualities.

And, so, it got me thinking about what exactly drives one to action. Is it just one factor or are there many?

What makes one work so tirelessly against the odds, and stand up for everything they believe in?

What makes some individuals transform their careers, causes, and enterprises into movements that inspire individuals, communities, and society?

These 7Ps seemed like the most common qualities of the successful…

1. Passion

This word can have multiple connotations but its central motif is the ability to drive a person to do something. It’s a strong feeling or emotion that pushes you to keep working.

Sometimes passion is triggered by an internal desire to prove yourself and your abilities. At other times, it could be a cause or belief that moves you enough to spend your whole life pursuing that one idea.

Passion then is the fire in your belly, the underlying motivator that keeps you going day after day — despite failures and rejections.

Passionate people are those who drive change, drive other people, and drive innovation.

2. Purpose

Passion is futile if there is no purpose to direct it toward.

For example, you could be an avid reader and thinker, consuming books faster than Pacman, but if you don’t know what to do with those thoughts, or if that knowledge doesn’t positively impact your own life, your growth will be stunted.

Successful people realize this very early on and decide to expend their energies and talents on something they believe in.

Sometimes the purpose finds them, sometimes they find their purpose. Either way, it becomes their singular focus and eventually becomes what they are known for.

3. Pride

This is not pride in the sense of one of the seven sins, but it is a sense of pride in who you are, what you believe in, where you’ve come from, and where you want to go.

Inspirational people have a great sense of self-worth, they are happy in their skin, and celebrate themselves.

This does not reflect arrogance, simply self-love, and a deep understanding of your inner nature and ability to live and thrive from that space.

Self-pride when transferred to your community or society or humanity as a whole, actually makes you strive harder toward its betterment.

4. Persistence

Persistence is the ability to stay focused day after day, obstacle after obstacle, failure after failure.

Because small steps taken every day finally add up to big success.

Because, the purpose you’re working for is bigger than the mini-wars of doubt and fear in your mind, or the big but conquerable resistance from doubters around you.

Persistence takes patience, but more than anything it takes a deep sense of belief and commitment toward your life purpose.

5. Persuasion

Persuasion is your ability to win the hearts of many through your persistence, hard work, and commitment to your purpose.

And, when persuasion is backed by a revolutionary idea that can change the way we live and think, then it becomes more readily acceptable by all.

While persuasion can often be misused for personal gain — as in the case of profit only in terms of numbers — when it is used for the benefit of society, it pushes your purpose further and takes it to a vast number of people.

6. Practice

“Practice what you preach” is a common saying. Most people we admire are known to live by what they believe in.

They don’t just talk about the importance of good health but espouse it — their skin, figure, and radiance all reflect good lifestyle habits. Similarly, leaders may tout socialism but if they continue to travel in high-end luxury vehicles and build castles for homes, no one will take them seriously.

Leaders have to lead by example, that’s what brings them respect, credibility, and a huge number of followers.

When what you believe in becomes something you live by, that’s when you can motivate yourself and others on the benefits of it.

7. People

In earlier times, people used to work for individuals— employees for employers, labourers for land owners, and ministers for the government.

But nowadays people work for ideas and innovations that will benefit much larger numbers of people, and not just those they work with.

Their stakeholders are many and the ultimate mission and vision is to enhance the lives of their beneficiaries or consumers, giving them better experiences, and leaving them richer for being in this world.

When you know your work is impacting a large number of people. your commitment to serving them gets clearer and more rewarding, ultimately fuelling you to do more and become more!
