Is Self-Help Content Really Helping Us?
Why we need it and why we don’t
I forwarded a YouTube reel on relationships to my mom, and her prompt response was, “No one is saying anything new.”
Well, yes, no one on the internet is actually saying anything “new.” But sometimes what they say resonates with the current situation we are in.
Or, perhaps they just articulate what we’re feeling better than us and hence we like listening to it.
It’s typical of moms to dismiss what you tell them, but there was some truth in what she said, which got me thinking…
Why do people throng to self-help content, which is in abundance nowadays in all formats?
Why are people watching the same spiel over and over again, just packaged differently or hashtagged to make it sound cool and shareable?
I must confess I’m a self-help junkie too and have always been one.
Has it enhanced my personality? I don’t know.
But does it give me that temporary motivation and feel-good factor after listening to it? Yes.
It’s also a reflection of my quest to keep learning more about life and living, with the hope that it may add a new dimension to it.
