A Daughter, Wife, Mother to a Home Baker….
Hello everyone! Allow me introduce myself. My name is Deepthi Abraham and I’ve been a baker all my life. My love for baking started when I was very young. My mum gave me and my sisters the responsibility of making dessert for her fabulous dinner parties (which I felt was the highlight of the event — not sure if everyone else would agree!). I started off trying out the recipes handed down by my mother and grandmother and it soon evolved into my own versions of classics, which fortunately turned out to be a great hit! Baking was my way of connecting with my grandmother, who I was very close with. I was proud to hear other family members say I inherited her flair for baking, especially the traditional Christmas Fruit cake that I make every year!
My journey…
Life moved on, I completed school and college, got married and became a mother to a beautiful baby girl. Got busy with life’s bustle and baking took a back seat. My husband was posted to China for a couple of years and I was working part-time. With time on my hands, I rekindled my love for baking. It was here that I enhanced my knowledge of baking. Many years had passed since I last picked up a spatula!
After moving back to the UK, my daughter started school and I found myself surprised at some of the unhealthy snacks that were available in the supermarkets. So, I looked to making tasty and healthy versions of the treats she loved so much! I started to experiment with healthy ingredients as substitutes to flour and sugar. I remember the first time I made a chocolate-courgette cake — I was apprehensive if my daughter would like it, so I told her there were chocolate chips in it!
One of the best gifts I received for my birthday was a Kitchen Aid mixer from my parents. My dream mixer!! a must for all bakers. This meant so much to me and I am grateful my parents believed in me and my passion for baking. It was at this time I started my first cake business venture called “My Sweet Treats Ltd”.
Present
I recently went through a re-branding exercise and finally settled on calling my business “At 180 degrees”. I chose this name as a reference to the temperature that cakes are baked and also to symbolize the wide range of treats I offer.
From simple cakes I graduated to making bespoke cakes. As the orders started to roll, the choice of designs started to get intricate with different themes depending on clients taste and choice. I now make cupcakes, brownies, healthy cookies and energy bars using healthy ingredients and am in the process of mastering Macarons and Vanilla iced cookies, which are on top of my wish list!
My current passion
I’ve recently developed a range of healthy snacks for kids that are both tasty and nutritious.They are made with healthy grains and use natural sugars found in fruits and vegetables!These are some of the tried-and-tested snacks that are bound to be a hit in your child’s lunch box.
My village…
They say it takes a village to raise a child and I can wholeheartedly say that its the same with a new business. I am very lucky to have an incredibly supportive community of friends and family from church, gym and the charity shop I volunteer at! After 30 odd years I think (hope) I have found the perfect balance of trying out different recipes & not having a perpetual expanding waistline thanks to the gym. I’ve volunteer at the British Heart Foundation for the past 10 years and they have become family to me. The cakes I make are made with a lot of attention to detail and can cater for special dietary needs such as gluten-free, vegan and egg free.
