Let’s get this out of the way. I’m a proponent of internships (as long as they’re paid) in general and have benefited from internships in the media/publishing, journalism and hospitality industries.

But, unlike many future data science candidates, I never did an internship while in school.

My decision to not do an internship was mostly out of necessity. My employer at the time paid for the entirety of my degree with one condition — I had to work for the duration of my degree program.

This made it difficult to commit to a part-time or full-time internship, so, realizing I didn’t have the time or resources to afford to intern full-time, I did pretty much everything else anyone established in the data or tech field tells you to do.

While I can’t promise that attempting to follow my path will give you similar results, I can say that it will get you on the right track.
