It is a common belief that starting a business is a mysterious process. Some have business ideas but don’t know the first steps to take, whilst a larger amount of people know they want to start a business, but do not have any business ideas. At this juncture, many begin turning to Google, or forums like Quora and Reddit.

This problem also isn’t one that is specific to aspiring business owners or entrepreneurs. Google is often a student’s best pal. From searching for ideas for a student club fundraising sale, to adapting from existing business models for hackathons and case competitions, Google is usually the go-to. Though people are rarely disappointed by Google, this method is not one without limitations.

Firstly, the process is usually tedious and time-consuming. Having to comb through page after page of search results and reading through each article or website is less than satisfactory, especially if one is at a hackathon with a 54 hour time limit. When one finally finds a project or idea that inspires them, what next? Do they take a screenshot or copy the link? How will they then present these ideas in their own presentations? This also then leads to another problem of the lack of traceability and difficulty in crediting the original idea owner.

After extensive collation of user feedback, the team at Pitchspot found the perfect solution to these problems, and we thus developed the Spot function.

What is the Spot function?

The Spot function on Pitchspot allows you to reproduce a personal copy of someone else’s project. This gives you the ability to edit the contents of your Spotted project without affecting the original copy that belongs to another user.

Build upon the works of others and transcend physical boundaries

When coupled with our Explore page, Spot provides the perfect avenue for aspiring entrepreneurs, founders and even students to build upon the ideas of others. Chanced upon an e-commerce idea from the US on the Explore page but live halfway across the world? Location does not deem the ideas of others defunct in your context — Spot the project and tweak it to suit the culture and norms where you live.

Whether in the realm of entrepreneurship or education, feedback from others is crucial in aiding improvement. When starting up, validation is an important step to take, to ensure that your business addresses the needs and wants of your target audience. Having your project Spotted by others allows you to broaden your horizons to various possibilities that you might not have previously considered.

The Spot function also allows you to credit the works of others, and get credited, with ease. Many creators face the problem of not receiving their due credit. At best, it is an annoyance, but in more severe cases, it could lead to financial losses. The Spot function allows for creators to be automatically credited, without the user having to put in any additional measures.

Network with other individuals interested in the same industry

Communities are the lifeblood of every startup. Sharing your ideas with interested parties, or Spotting the projects of others is an easy way to build a community around your idea. Through Spotting a project or allowing others to Spot yours, you are more likely to gather a group of people who are interested in your idea. These people may form your base of early adopters, or might even be your business partners or mentors.
