At 5:20 am the clock radio alarm went off.

…and this one goes out to June and Ralphy who are on the road to Phoenix this morning. Take it away Glen Campbell with By The Time I Get To Phoenix.

“WTF, Ralphy? How do they know we’re on the road to Phoenix?”

“I called into the station earlier, I was having trouble sleeping.”

June was fuming. I could see her point, given that “they” were coming. I didn’t have a clue who they were, but if “they” were tangled up with Eric, it wouldn’t be good. Eric was a hyper-intelligent, paranoid prepper who played 3-dimensional backgammon with my mum. He always let her win. If there was anything I didn’t know the answer to, which was a lot, then Eric was the man I turned to.

He’d gotten me the job cleaning out the yard of Old Mrs Wilson. She was a chronic hoarder. The executor said take whatever you like as long as the rest goes to the tip. It’s where I found the object.

“I’m sorry, June. Maybe we should bypass Phoenix? And maybe Phoenix needs to get another song…
