Kevin Durant, superstar basketball player for the Golden State Warriors and two-time NBA Champion, announced earlier this afternoon that he would be taking the next step forward in his career by joining up with the Super Smash Bros. crew.

The news comes on the heels of Nintendo announcing the next iteration in it’s massively successful series, titled Super Smash Bro. Ultimate. The title is set to launch on December 7, 2018, and will contain one of the most stacked lineups in fighting game history — with every character from previous Smash Bros. games being confirmed as well as newcomers Inkling (Splatoon series) and Ridley (Metroid series).

“I’m always looking for ways to elevate myself,” says the 29-year-old Durant, “Joining up with the folks at Nintendo and getting to play alongside so many awesome people is an absolute dream.” Durant believes that fighting alongside the surplus of experienced fighters will also help him become a better fighter himself, which is said to be a main concern of his following the repeated social media beatings he received at the hands of former-teammate Russell Westbrook this past year.

“I’m sure all the Game Boys — that’s what I’m calling the gaming fans that gonna be running their mouths about me, it’s just a clever thing I came up with — gonna be sending hate my way, but it never phases me,” says Durant.

As far as his Warriors teammates go, none of the players have chosen comment on how they feel about the 9x All-Star leaving them. However, general manager of the Warriors, Bob Myers, did issue a statement:

“It was great for Kevin to have spent some of his years with us. We didn’t need him at all to win, we just loved the idea of not having to play against him. We suckered him real good, most of which being my doing because I know everything. Nintendo knows they don’t need him to win Best Fighting Game at the VGA’s, they just don’t want him joining up with Dragon Ball FighterZ; they just want to be safe.”

By the looks of it, there’s sure to be plenty more sparks to fly between now and early December when Super Smash Bros. Ultimate bursts onto the scene.
