If you lived thousands of years ago and wanted to embellish your castle you would hire an artist to paint a piece of artwork on the walls. The artist’s job would be to express your individuality through the painting and match it to the architectural elements of the given space.

As a result, your castle would look like no other in the world and would be in harmony with who you are. These days we don’t have castles, and most of us cannot afford an artist’s fee. But this doesn’t mean that we can’t give our walls a glamorous look. With high-quality digital prints each one of us can design an artistic mural that will bring beauty into our interiors.

Wall Mural Qualities

An inspiration for our home art may come from a treasure trove of wall murals offered by print stores. The designs range from delicate sketches to depictions of flora and fauna to bold landscapes. Images can be printed in any size, to match the walls you wish to cover, in a non-woven matte or semi-gloss finish. It is also possible to enlarge and print your own images — your artwork, or a piece of a beloved artist.

A crayon painting of a river tastefully executed on a large wall tones down spaciousness of this room, $514 for 134 x 126” piece.

First Things First

Before we choose a motif or design of the mural we need to take a closer look at the architecture of our space. What are the base colors on the furniture, lighting, and flooring? Our mural should fit seamlessly with the base of our interior. Shades of colors on the floor, table, bookcase, and the like should match the hue of the image on the wall. Also, the tone of a piece of artwork should align with the style of your room — sketches and pastel designs work well for Scandinavian style, bold landscapes or typography are a match for modern looks, native art from Japan is a must for a Japanese interior.

A delicate, creamy hued passage with arches on the wall, $851 for 236 x 118” panel, combined with wooden floor and beige sofa creates an interesting blend of classical and modern style in this room.

Fitting in — Big, Small, Light & Bold

Once we have an idea for a mural it’s time to select a wall for it. For side walls, it’s good to use depictions of flora or repeatable patterns because these walls are a background and should not attract our attention. In contrast, motifs placed on a front wall will have the most impact on the atmosphere in the room and can be vivid, bold and large.

Classic Roses from PIXERS

Pastel classic roses add a gentle charm to the whiteness of this living room $261 for 135 x 63” panel.

Composition — Light or Dark

While choosing a wall mural you will have to decide on the hue of an image. The basic rule is: large light murals make an interior more spacious and bright, and large dark murals close the space and give a feeling of security to the room.

A wall mural in darker colors well placed on a wall behind the sofa limits the space and sets a base for a romantic style in this living room.

Superior Art on the Wall

In case you’re searching for a one-of-a-kind piece of art, a printed-out piece of artwork of a modern artist could be an option for you. This could be a bit more expensive than ready-made murals, but with a true painting, you’ll gain a room filled with the spirit of an artist you’re fond of.

Sous Les Cocotiers by Haby Bonomo

For example, this painting of South American artist Haby Bonomo called “ Sous Les Cocotiers” (59 X 55”) can be enlarged to any size and serve as a wall-covering at a price of $100 per square meter.

Go Beyond Walls

In old times, artists who wanted to draw away from conservative, conventional monochrome interior decorations used to paint over every available surface — tables, chairs, bed heads and bookcases. These days, we can follow their lead and, apart from coloring our walls, apply artwork on our furniture. The mentioned wallpaper print stores offer quality window and furniture decals that can be fixed to any surface and become an integral part of an item.

Put Your Heart & Soul Into It

At times when artists crafted artwork for their clients, they faced a challenge of marrying their muse with the individuality of each client. Today, as you are an artist of your own, the challenge is simpler — you have to find an inner muse to express your uniqueness in your interior.

It takes the time to get this right and your artwork will evolve organically while you hover over endless options of designs. But no worry, once you find the piece you love, it’ll stick with you and please you for a long time.
