National Mutt Day: Retouching A Dog Portrait
In honor of National Mutt Day, here’s a tutorial on how you can go about retouching a dog portrait using Pixlr X. I chose this handsome pitbull photo by contributor lunja on 123RF.
Here’s what I’m basically going to do:
- adjust the hue and saturation of the pitbull portrait
- increase the amount of shadow
- add some natural bokeh light effects
Start by adjusting the Color values under Adjust.
Vibrance — 64 | Saturation — 10 | Temperature — 34 | Tint — 4
Under Light values, make the following adjustments on the slider:
Brightness — 2 |Exposure — 14 |Shadows — -40
Under Filter, adjust these sliders minutely under Details:
Sharpen — 8 Clarity — 4
The next step is to add bokeh lights. Under Overlay, select Bokeh and scroll to the Bokeh overlay that you think will suit your photo.
I went with the one below because it felt like the most natural. Adjust the transparency of the overlay layer to 70 on the slider. 100% was a bit too strong for this dog portrait, but if it works for your image, go with that.
Add minor adjustments to the vibrancy and hue of your image if you feel it’s necessary. If not, you can skip that step and go ahead with saving your edited dog portrait. And voila!
