Carta pública contra o posicionamento do DataCamp ao caso de assédio sexual

Na última semana (4 de Abril de 2019) o DataCamp, uma das principais plataformas de ensino de Ciência de Dados no mundo, publicou uma nota sobre um assédio sexual envolvendo um executivo e uma funcionária. A nota deixa claro que, apesar de repudiarem este tipo de atitude, o executivo não recebeu nenhuma punição grave. Além disso não há menções sobre como será evitado este tipo de conduta no futuro e nem mesmo o que aconteceu com a funcionária que denunciou o assédio.
Em um outro tweet, um dos instrutores do DataCamp, mostrou que a plataforma deliberadamente bloqueou a nota oficial de ser indexada pelos motores de busca, ou seja, a nota oficial não será encontrada por alguém que procurar por ela em qualquer ferramenta de busca. Isso não é padrão nas demais publicações da empresa.
Ao menos dois instrutores criaram cartas públicas com pedidos para que as pessoas não continuassem usando a plataforma e exigindo medidas drásticas. Os textos de Noam Ross e Julia Silge ainda relatam que muitas conversas internas foram feitas, buscando uma solução “pacífica” e definitiva. Diversas comunidades, incluindo a Rstudio estavam se posicionando contra a empresa.
Nós, do Pizza de Dados, repudiamos todo e qualquer ato de assédio e acreditamos que este tipo de atitude não pode e nem deve passar impune. A forma que o DataCamp escolheu para lidar com a situação foi fraca, para dizer o mínimo. Nós acreditamos que o assunto deveria ter sido discutido de forma transparente e medidas mais efetivas contra o agressor, independentemente do seu cargo, deveriam ter sido tomadas.
Nós agradecemos a posição de muitos instrutores e instrutoras que abertamente pediram para seus estudantes e colegas boicotarem a plataforma, arriscando perder suas fontes de renda. E estamos entrando na iniciativa de apoio contra este tipo de atitude, retirando todos os links que direcionam para cursos do DataCamp em nosso guia oficial de materiais de ciência de dados em português e também dos artigos de nosso podcast.

Public letter against DataCamp stand on the sexual harassment case
On the last week (April 4th of 2019) DataCamp, one of the main platform in Data Science learning, published a blog post on the sexual harassment case involving an executive and an employee. The blog post clearly states that even though DataCamp condemns such actions, the executive didn’t get any strong punishment. Other than that, there aren’t mentions on what measures were taken to avoid this kind of thing from happening again or even what happened to the employee that denounced the harassment.
DataCamp also deliberately blocked the blog post from being indexed by search engines, this means that the official note can’t be found by someone that is searching for it. This fact was brought to the public attention by one of DataCamp’s instructors in another tweet that stated: this behavior isn’t the default in the rest of the posts on the company’s website.
At least two DataCamp’s instructors posted public letters asking people to refrain from using the website and to demand more drastic measures. Noam Ross’ and Julia Silge’s posts also tell that many conversations happened internally with DataCamp in search for a more “pacific” and definitive solution. Many communities also took a stand against DataCamp including Rstudio.
We from Pizza de Dados, the first Brazilian podcast about data science, reject any act of harassment and believe that this can not and should not go unpunished. The way that DataCamp chose to deal with this situation is weak, to say the least. We also believe that this matter should’ve been discussed in a more transparent way and that more effective measures against the aggressor should’ve taken place no matter their role.
We appreciate the position that many instructors had in openly asking their friends and students to boycott the platform risking their income in the process. We are taking part in supporting the movement against such actions by removing all links that direct to DataCamp courses from our official guide to data science materials in Portuguese and also removing links from the episodes postings from our podcast.
