I spotted this woman as she was coming down from the Jackson Height’s subway station. She was wearing jeans under her Sari. This balance between tradition and modernity is extremely representative of the neighborhood.
This man was talking to the owner of this fruit cart. She didn’t want to be in the picture. He didn’t think he would be either but seemed very curious about was I was doing and kept looking right at the camera.
This man was just eating the Daal (a lentil based Indian dish) he had bought from the vendor standing in the picture. In Jackson Heights it is very common to see people standing in the streets eating meals from all over the world at these tiny stands.
These are silhouettes of mannequins wearing Saris. They are standing in a street facing a pharmacy which is next to a lotto stand, itself next to a computer store. This organized chaos is typical of the neighborhood.
Food seems to hold a crucial place in Jackson Height’s. Whether it’s cooked meals, juices or simply raw vegetables, food is everywhere.
This man was giving out flyers for the Sari store right behind him. His elegance and piercing gaze were mesmerizing.
This man was sitting outside a barbershop waiting for his haircut. The shop is right next to a bagel place, again underlining the heterogeneity of Jackson Heights.
No one is ever too old for a treat at the ice-cream truck. As the woman ordered her ice-cream the line behind her grew bigger. Kids were getting out of class but none of them were in that line.
This man seemed very interested in FedEx’s schedule. He looked very elegant with his stripped hat and brown suit.
Workers as they morning shift had recently begun. They contrasted nicely with the two ladies walking by on their morning stroll.
This hairdresser was located inside the subway station. I was intrigued by its uncanny location and the diversity of the customers. The three times I passed by it I saw Black, Indian and Latin men all getting their hair cut.
The zigzag formed by this emergency staircase looked interesting. Like with almost everything is Jackson Heights, there is a real diversity in architecture but this type of building seemed like the most common.
