Hello world. Welcome to the new home of Plaid’s design team.

Much like other design team blogs, this is a space where we’ll share some of our work, our process, and our thinking in the hopes that it inspires and helps the broader design community understand the context that we work within, and through that understanding find insight that helps designers in their own practice.

Where this will inevitably be a little different from other design blogs is in what we talk about. Plaid’s business is incredibly complex, and the design team spends a lot of time navigating that complexity. We have four main constituencies we consider in the products and services that we design: humans (people who use Plaid to share their financial data with an app or service), our customers (developers of all sizes), banks and financial institutions (that hold their users financial data), and industry standards (that help provide guidance).

Each of those comes with their own set of considerations, and balancing all of those within our design process is a unique challenge that this team handles on a daily basis. We’re hoping that there are some interesting perspectives and stories that come out of that work.

The design team at Plaid comes from many different backgrounds with varied perspectives — product and interaction designers, visual storytellers, researchers, content strategists, animators, illustrators and more. We’re a relatively small team, but we’re growing quickly and trying to be intentional about how we grow and how we work together and with our peer functions in the wider Plaid organization. There’s plenty to share from that process, too.

But, ultimately, this is intended to be a space where every voice on the design team can be heard, and designers of every experience level and focus can share their thinking and their work. We’re all really excited to start that conversation.
