Amazon Joins the Generative AI Battle
With the introduction of Bedrock, a new cloud-based service that provides access to pre-built generative models from start-ups like AI21 Labs and Stability AI, Amazon is joining the ongoing generative AI battle. In recent months, Amazon has been relatively quiet while rivals including Microsoft and Google have unveiled headline-grabbing new solutions that take advantage of generative AI. Kyle Wiggers of TechCrunch notes, however, that Amazon’s recent partnership announcements have “somewhat telegraphed” this news.
Bedrock is one of several updates aimed at attracting generative AI developers to Amazon Web Services. Amazon has also announced the Titan foundation model (FM) family, which currently comprises a pair of large language models, with more expected to come. Additionally, CodeWhisperer, Amazon’s AI-powered programming tool (comparable to GitHub’s Copilot), is now free for individuals and available to businesses through a paid model.

A New Generative Solution and New Regulations in China
This week, Chinese tech giant Alibaba introduced its own answer to ChatGPT, Tongyi Qianwen, and the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) outlined new rules affecting generative AI. Though the CAC is clear in acknowledging the potential value of emerging solutions, its regulations demand that AI-developed content is in keeping with the nation’s “core socialist values” and hold operators responsible for submitting to regulatory safety reviews. The public is invited to comment until May 10th before the regulations take effect later this year. Gizmodo quotes a number of experts who suggest the proposed regulations represent a potential threat to fundamental human rights.
The CAC’s announcement comes at a time when governments around the world are attempting to better understand the impacts of emerging solutions. On Tuesday, the US Department of Commerce announced that its National Telecommunications and Information Administration was inviting public commentary on the best next steps for setting rules to make AI safer and more transparent.
Record Label Aims to Keep AI Off Streaming Services
Generative AI is everywhere, shaking up journalism, the audiobook industry, education, and just about every walk of life while dominating the tech conversation. This week, the Financial Times broke the news that Universal Music Group (UMG) is taking steps to discourage AI disruption in recording. While music generators have not captured as much attention the same way as chatbots and image generators, the pace of recent innovation suggests just about anything is possible. OpenAI, the team behind ChatGPT, has developed Jukebox, which has already showcased imitations of artists including Katy Perry and Jay-Z.
UMG is particularly concerned about solutions that might scrape streaming services to help train models and create digital clones of its artists. Their email to Apple Music, Spotify, and other streamers asked for a crackdown on AI developers training solutions with copyrighted material. “We will not hesitate,” it reads, “to take steps to protect our rights and those of our artists.”
