On the past 24,25 of march 2021 I had the great opportunity to participate in the Hackathon event organized by KPMG Digital Talent Women Day Spain.

This was an incredible way of getting to know other women working in the field of Data Science, Analytics, Data architecture, Data engineering, Business and Software development. We had the great pleasure to interact with senior professionals with great experience and expertise in different areas of the business. To get to know hiring managers and recruiters from the firm in different departments and to work together with other highly talented women.

The event started on Wednesday 24th at 9am with a presentation by Alejandro Pino.

Then Marisol Menendez talked about her career and her different experiences in industry and different projects.

After that we were assigned to our team and got to know our team members: Valentina Díaz Torres, Marta Suárez-Cantón, Marta Navarrón García, Nuria Peñas Rica, Irene Berros, Clara Rull.

At this time was when we knew the project we will be working on for the day.

We were supposed to work on the project from a bank that was implementing an algorithm to predict fraud but it was not working properly. The only data we had was a confusion matrix, an histogram and a timeline of the predictions.

Even if it took us a bit to know each other and to start working properly on the problem I think we did a very good job. Thanks to the help of the recruiter Fermín Simón Merino and Estefanía Sanz. Who oriented us in the right direction we achieved a very good result and were able to do a very professional presentation.

The first day we end up working until 7pm even if the even ended at 6pm that day. Every team works independently and is allowed to work extra hours up to the next day when the presentations are made. The order of the presentations is scheduled randomly the day before.

In Thursday 25th each team presented their work and each of them were judged and asked by the jury. Feedback was provided by the jury but as a team not as individuals. At the end of the day (2pm) the winner was announced based on the jury decision. In this case the winner was the last group who presented a great app for elderly people that captivated the jury.

All in all was a great experience that I would like to summarize in two main conclusions:

  1. We are a lot of young talented women in the world today, which makes me very proud.
  2. Competitively and Fellowship go hand by hand. Without the other you cannot improve and overcome yourself.

Thanks for reading as always! Give it a thumbs up if you liked it! You can also find me on twitter, youtube, instagram and GitHub. See you in the next post!
