Up to a fresh start

EKS Project
Into becoming a Data Scientist
4 min readFeb 8, 2021

Things have changed for me at a personal level, since I started writing in this platform.

My nervous me before presenting my Msc thesis on Machine Learning. Science or art?

However my interest in Data Science is still the same if not even bigger.

At the moment I am going through a learning phase and I want to share it and leave a trace of what I do.

I want to document my journey while being able to inspire others that have not taken a step forward yet.

Why do I do all this?

My final goal, my clear mission is to be a good senior data scientist one day, near future 5 to 10 years. But not only that, I want my work to have a positive impact on society, to be recognized and valued. And of course, that my work enables me to make a good living.

I think is worth making an effort and for me is a good goal to live up to.

How am I going to do it?

Well, at the moment I have enrolled a Data Science course at a school called The Bridge, I will be talking more about it later on. The course is 8 months long and through it expect to obtain hand-on experience in data analysis, machine learning, python among other skills that a data scientist must acquire. My objective is to use these skills in a future job and start working as data scientist in junior positions after this education is done.

It would be naive to believe this last point is going to be easy and that 8 months are enough to become a good data scientist. However I truly believe that taking advantage of this period at its maximum can be enough to become a good professional and to start this journey with the right foot.

Moreover, as I wrote above, I want that my work as a positive effect on the world we live in. My way of achieving this is through biology. My previous background on biomedical engineering provides me with enough knowledge to be able to interpret complex biological problems. My aim here is to focus my work on computational biology, bioinformatics and biostatistics.

Although these fields are very specific and require to understand many rules that only apply to them my idea is to learn from them after I have acquired my base education on Data Science.

What am I going to do?

This project can be considered as a life project within a time range of 5 to 10 years. Hopefully I will read this post somewhere in the future and still be aligned with the values and goals I set now. If not, it is totally ok. Is good to have a final goal but it is also good to readjust along the way.

Concerning more on the methodology and the specific actions. Here are some projects I start now. Not sure for how long but sure I have great expectations.

  1. Tutorials:

Summarizing pieces of information concerning the most used programming language in data science now a days, Python. There might be other topics such as Rstudio, installations etc.

2. Hooked on the book:

This is a section is a way to force myself to read a book a month. I consider myself a reader. However I have been disconnected from this part of myself for now too long and I want it back. This is a way of abstracting myself from the data, computer, phone and programming world for a little while in my day. Also a great way to learn, to enhance my imagination and creativity. But most of all to satisfy my curiosity.

3. Paper reviews:

It is still a vague idea in my mind, to do a periodical review of a scientific paper now and then. It will keep me connected to academia somehow and also aware of the state-of-the-art on different topics. It will also help me to learn to understand and summarize complex information.

4. Personal/Professional projects:

To explore the data science world my idea is to develop small at first and bigger and more complex data science projects each time. They will concern different topics maybe every day life issues but keeping in mind the passion and attraction towards biological data science.

All these content will be present in my youtube channel, instagram and twitter combined with posts in here, Medium.

If someone read up to here , thanks for reading me.

I wish myself good luck in this journey. Keep yourself posted on how it goes!
