How to set up Two-factor authentication (2FA) for Earth2io

What is 2FA in earth2?

2FA is an extra layer of security used to make sure that people trying to gain access to an online account are who they say they are. First, a user will enter their username and a password. Then, instead of immediately gaining access, they will be required to provide another piece of information like a security question, a code sent to phone/email, or a code from authenticator apps.

Earth2 uses a soft token displayed via the authenticator app as a second point of verification.

Which app should you install?

You can install any major authenticator app which supports QR codes.

Some options are:

• Google authenticator
• Authy
• Microsoft Authenticator
• Lastpass Authenticator
• AndOTP

We recommend Google authenticator since it's very easy to set up and is secure based on various reviews.

Here’s how to set it up for google authenticator:

(steps would be similar for other apps also)

1. Download Google Authenticator from either the Apple App Store or the Android Google Play store. It’s free.

2. Go to Earth2.io website and click on settings.

3. In two-factor Authentication, click the ‘OPEN 2FA PREFERENCES’ button.

4. Click next until you see a QR code.

5. Open the actual Google Authenticator app on your phone and tap the plus button.

6. At the bottom of your screen two options will show up, “Scan barcode” and “Enter a setup key”

7. Choose the “Scan barcode” option and scan the QR code given in.

8. You are all set. (There are additional QR codes given in the account for backup proposes. print it and store it somewhere so that you can access the account when google authenticator is unavailable.

9. Now, each time you log into the Earth2io account, the account will ask you to enter a six-digit verification code once you enter the user name and password. Simply open the Google Authenticator app, and the app will generate the new, randomized code for you to enter.

Do not use the backup codes given unless you lose connection to Authenticator.

If you lose the mobile where you set up the authenticator, you will be able to set it up again once you login back to Earth2.
