Sensing is Mining!
PlanetWatch delivers an end-to-end solution to generate, validate, analyze and record air quality data. Proprietary algorithms, mobile and web apps
leverage a wide range of leading-edge technologies. At the heart of our system, Planet tokens enable anyone to benefit from streaming air quality data to PlanetWatch from an approved sensor. Let’s see how this works in detail.
Key Token Facts
- Planet is a utility token issued on the Algorand blockchain. Planets can be regarded as credits towards PlanetWatch products and services (both for consumers and corporates) or donated to support high-profile projects.
- The maximum supply of Planet tokens is 4.500.000.000, as a tribute to the estimated age of the Earth (4.5 billion years).
The vast majority (95%) of Planets will be earned over time in return for valid sensor data. A small fraction (5%) is allocated immediately to PlanetWatch. This allocation will be mostly used to jumpstart the network and reward specific contributions (Ambassadors, technical bounties, PlanetWatch team, etc.).
Token FAQs
How do you earn Planets?
Rewards are earned when a sensor sends valid data to PlanetWatch. We call this “Sensing is Mining”, although strictly speaking no cryptocurrency mining takes place as our project runs on the Algorand blockchain.
Basic reward: 0.01 Planet per each valid measure (PM1, PM2,5, PM10, etc.). The basic reward decreases by 10% every year.
Projected release period: 10+ years.
Actual rewards may be higher than the basic rewards. They will depend on:
- Sensor and data types,
- Time-limited promotional campaigns.
As a matter of fact, the PlanetWatch sensor network will aggregate and process data from several types of sensors.
How are rewards split?
Rewards are split across different ecosystem stakeholders as follows:
- The Owner share rewards: all owners of sensors connected to PlanetWatch and streaming valid data.
- The Infrastructure share rewards: people and organizations providing installation sites and taking care of sensor maintenance. PlanetWatchers who install on their property and maintain their own sensor will get both the Owner and the Infrastructure token share, for a total 60% share.
- PlanetWatch will earn a 30% share which will be used to maintain and grow the ecosystem.
- A 10% share will be put in a special Development account. Planets from this account will be used to support future projects with high social impact.
How can I use Planets?
PlanetWatchers will be able to use them to obtain useful products such as home air purifiers and to gain access to future Premium features in our mobile Apps, e.g. identifying the least polluted jogging path in your area.
Why are Planets valuable also for Corporate & Governmental entities?
Such entities will be able to use Planets to gain full access to real-time, global air quality data, including for resale purposes, or to get advertising slots in our mobile Apps. Finally, Planets can be used by corporations to support PlanetWatch’s high-impact projects and to gain global visibility as a PlanetWatch Partner.
Are there any fees related to sensors?
A recurrent sensor connection fee (payable in Planets) is charged from the second year against the Infrastructure share.
Which types of sensors are you using to start building the PlanetWatch network?
We will deploy several types of sensors in order to cover our key use cases and cater for different budget levels. Sensors will be assigned to different categories based on specifications, budget and use cases, such as:
- “Leaf” — Around you: Lightweight, low-cost, mobile PM sensor which you can carry with you all the time while jogging, biking, etc. Data streaming requires installing an App in your smartphone and keeeping it connected to the Internet (background mode works only for Android devices).
- “Edge” — Outdoor: A high-end outdoor PM sensor which you could place on your balcony. It only requires power from an electrical outlet, as data are sent to our servers via a SIM card provided with the sensor.
- “Tree” — Outdoor Premium: Same ad “Edge”, but it also measures some gases (NO2 and O3 or SO2 and CO).
When will I be able to get a PlanetWatch-approved sensor and start earning Planets?
We are in the process of testing and onboarding several sensors as described above. We will soon release some exciting offers both for consumers and for corporations.
What does “adopt a sensor” mean?
Adopt a sensor is a corporate-only opportunity. By helping PlanetWatch cover procurement, installation and maintenance costs for sensors installed in the framework of high-profile projects, companies can earn Planet tokens generated by those sensors. Planets will give access to the following benefits:
- Global visibility as a PlanetWatch Partner. Company name will be linked to a high-profile project, e.g. as the enabler of air quality monitoring in a highly polluted city.
- Advertising slots in our mobile app.
- Premium access to real-time air quality data, including for commercial applications.
- The possibility in the future to sell products and services on our online marketplace if Planet tokens are accepted as payment.
