Resistance is Fertile — Rise Up Against Trump Incorporated’s Plans For World Domination

When our or other humans’ very existence is challenged, it is incumbent upon us to rise up and resist.

There is a famous line from Star Trek that many of us know. Resistance is futile and we will be assimilated into the Borg, a soul-less hive mind, whether we want to or not. The Borg in this case is the system of competition, corruption, domination, and control we are all an unfortunate part of. What we need to understand is that our very existence is at stake. It is time for all of us to rise up. We need a revolution of mind and that starts with changing our own minds.

Resistance is not futile.

The history of liberty is a history of resistance. -Woodrow Wilson

This election debacle is, in fact, a hostile takeover. We need to rethink the supposed futility of resistance as it disempowers us and encourages complacency, apathy, and inaction. I, for one, as a female, mixed race, disabled veteran, progressive, and mother, will not roll over. I will not take it on the chin. I will not accept the tyranny that is barreling towards us, indeed a runaway train that could lead to our collective destruction. There is a war of ideas underway and I will wage peace in response. I stand for and with the whole of humanity, not a select, privileged few. I will insist on life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all.

I will resist.

Resistance is actually fertile, meaning resistance is something fertilized in us and something we fertilize in others. Resistance to the established frame for thinking, resistance to normalizing what we know is wrong, and resistance to deeply held assumptions have been at the root of all great cultural transformation. The term has been used in other contexts before, but I would now like to apply it to many resistance efforts currently in progress. I would also like to rally those of you incredulous about the state of our country and our world.

What does it mean to resist?

So many of us think that there is no point to resist what we take as given. Donald Trump sort of won the election. Obama is stepping down. In a few days we will see sworn in a person, indeed a regime, that were legitimately chosen via the will of the people. Except that is not true. A prosperous, just, fair, and equitable future has been torn from us, and from the children in our world. This is THEIR future, and we adults need to fight for it.

Resistance can seem difficult, but it is necessary. Although individually we might feel like Sisyphus pushing the rock up the mountain, together with us all pushing, we can make a dent. It is our duty to do so.

Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance. — Robert Kennedy

So, resistance fertilizers, here is how to resist.

Resist not bothering to take the time to educate yourself.

Resist the urge to remain silent.

Resist thinking you are powerless.

Resist thinking it can’t be done or that there is nothing you can do.

Resist the urge to look away from things that are difficult or confusing.

Resist navel gazing as a way of ignoring the big picture issues.

Resist encroachment and erosion of hard-won civil and human rights.

Resist the nepotism and cronyism propelling the regime change forward.

Resist buying into systems of thought that exploit and marginalize a huge percentage of our world’s population.

Resist being told what to think or what to believe.

Resist the urge to think that your voice isn’t important.

Resist making jokes about these serious matters.

Resist those who lie to silence their adversaries.

Resist the notion of fake news and figure it out yourselves.

Resist the urge to not like, share, or otherwise promote other resistors.

Resist oppression of self or others.

Resist buying into rhetoric and propaganda.

Seek out and fertilize other resistors, as well as boosting their signal.

Remember that our resistance is non-violent and non-hateful.

Resist taking the low road — compel with evidence, not ad hominem attacks.

Since being in India, I am more convinced than ever before that the method of nonviolent resistance is the most potent weapon available to oppressed people in their struggle for justice and human dignity. Martin Luther King, Jr.
