Cruz and Fiorina Team Up to Create The Most Loathsome Ticket in America

This week Ted Cruz made a bold statement when he chose Carly Fiorina as his vice presidential running mate. He asserted that no matter what — — no matter how many votes he loses, how far behind he falls in the polls, how many women and men he alienates, or how many lives are at risk — — his campaign is about one thing and one thing only: restricting women’s access to reproductive health care.

Let’s revisit. In case you’re unfamiliar with Ted Cruz’s record, he’s best known for his zealous pursuit of ending access to reproductive health care at all costs. Last year, he held Congress hostage, threatening to shut down the government, in an unpopular attempt to block low-income women from accessing basic health care like cancer screenings or birth control. Ted Cruz wants to ban abortion, without exceptions even for victims of rape. And Ted Cruz has embraced the most extreme and dangerous elements of the anti-abortion movement — — namely the leader of Operation Rescue, Troy Newman, a man who has called the murder of doctors who provide abortion “justifiable.” Newman is so extreme that Australia literally won’t let him in their country.

Carly Fiorina built her campaign around flat-out lies about Planned Parenthood — — lies she stuck to even when every single fact-checker repeatedly called her out. During her failed presidential campaign, she even ambushed a preschool field trip to use toddlers as a tiny prop audience in an anti-abortion talk. On the campaign trail both she and Cruz have repeated incendiary rhetoric about reproductive health providers — — helping to foster a climate of violence that has led to a nine-fold increase in threats to abortion providers in the past six months. When a gunman committed a horrific act of violence in Colorado Springs, opening fire at a Planned Parenthood health center, killing three people, wounding nine more, and repeating the same lines Carly Fiorina and Ted Cruz had been using on the campaign trail, both Fiorina and Cruz dismissed concerns about the shooter’s anti-abortion connection.

Truly, a Cruz-Fiorina ticket would be a nightmare for America. Both Cruz and Fiorina:

  • Want to ban abortion
  • Would rather shut down the government than allow low-income women to access birth control and lifesaving cancer screenings at Planned Parenthood.
  • Continue to embrace incendiary rhetoric and lies about Planned Parenthood that have led to an increase in violence, threats and political attacks against abortion providers
  • Have wholeheartedly echoed the disproven criminal video campaign attacking Planned Parenthood — despite the fact that officials in 12 states found that the claims against Planned Parenthood made in the videos had absolutely no merit and a Grand Jury in Texas not only cleared Planned Parenthood of any wrongdoing but also indicted the leader of the video attack campaign

Their agenda is so unpopular that both of them have resorted to blatant, inflammatory lies in order to legitimize their extreme beliefs. And in case you hadn’t made the connection, these same lies threaten women’s access to health care across this country.
