What you missed on DNC Day 3
- Planned Parenthood Action Fund’s incredible member-volunteers continued to turn Philadelphia pink!
They were out and about in sweltering heat — 93 degrees yesterday! They’ve signed up 3,570 new Action Fund members and handed out mountains of pink swag — including the famous Trump condoms.
It takes real passion to get this excited about anything in 93 degrees — and we have the fiercest supporters and volunteers anywhere!
2. NARAL’s President Ilyse Hogue spoke from the DNC stage about her abortion.
“I made the decision that was best for me — to have an abortion — and was able to get compassionate care at a clinic in my own community. Now, years later, my husband and I are parents to two incredible children. My story is not unique. About 1 in 3 American women have abortions by the age of 45, and the majority are mothers just trying to take care of the families they already have. You see, it’s not as simple as bad girls get abortions and good girls have families. We are the same women at different times in our lives — each making decisions that are the best for us.”
It was a major moment for all of us working to shatter abortion stigma — I’m so proud to be in this movement with Ilyse.
3. Georgia House of Representatives member Park Cannon made us all cheer when she said “We need to trust Black women.”
“I am a woman, I am African American, I am queer and I am the newest member of the Georgia House of Representatives. I ran for office because I represent the rainbow of voices that too often went unheard at our state Capital. We need to trust black women. Our America is unapologetically ready to stand together.”
Here’s why it matters, from SisterSong’s Monica Simpson.
4. EMILY’s List President Stephanie Schriock put anti-women’s health politicians on blast.
“Women don’t just fight for women. They fight for families, they fight for fairness, inclusion and justice. No wonder Republican leaders oppose equal pay for women and refuse to stand up for working mothers trying to balance career and family. That’s why they let your boss fire you for using birth control and force us to undergo invasive transvaginal ultrasounds. They don’t respect women. They don’t trust women. They want to control women.”
5. President Barack Obama made the case for Hillary Clinton.
It was one of his best speeches of all time (and that’s saying something). It made all of us proud to live in America and gave us hope for what we can accomplish together with Hillary Clinton as our president.
“There is only one candidate in this race who believes in that future, and has devoted her life to it; a mother and grandmother who’d do anything to help our children thrive; a leader with real plans to break down barriers, blast through glass ceilings, and widen the circle of opportunity to every single American, the next President of the United States, Hillary Clinton.
“I can say with confidence there has never been a man or a woman more qualified than Hillary Clinton to serve as president of the United States of America.”
“She’s been there for us even if we haven’t always noticed. And if you’re serious about our democracy, you can’t afford to stay home just because she might not align with you on every issue. You’ve got to get in the arena with her, because democracy isn’t a spectator sport.”
