Your Cleft Journey: Your Eyes
“No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him.” 1 Corinthians 2:9
It was the first thing people noticed about you, your eyes. I cannot tell you how many a spectator paid tribute to them. So deep. So blue. Your great grandmother said, “You can almost see right through them.” Many commented on how alert you were, and how it seemed you were noticing everything. You seemed to know more than you should.
They hold such purity, such curiosity, such beauty. I love how they light up when you smile, when we talk to you, and when you are looking at us. They twinkle when you laugh and sparkle in the sun.
Oh how I wish I could protect those eyes forever. I wish I could catch and bottle up all the tears before one of them hits your cheeks. I wish I could keep out all the darkness, all the strange looks that are ignorant of your beauty, all the broken bullies who are just looking to tear someone down. I wish what any parent does, that I could shield you always.
I may not be able to shield you, but what I can do is pray; That amidst all the tears you will cry and the things that will break your heart in this world, you would be able to see the good, the beauty. I pray you would allow your eyes to wonder, to look long at the majesty of the ocean or the glory of the mountaintops. I pray those long gazes would lift your eyes to the hills, where your help comes from. May you gaze on the One who loves you, watches over you, and created those beautiful things for you to behold.
I pray your eyes would always be able to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Be strong and take heart, dear one. I am confident your eyes will see great things.
“I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.” Psalm 27:13–14
