Well beyond my wildest expectations!

Platform Education has monumentally exceeded my best expectations. As a full-time working mum who hasn’t taken the kids to the dentist for two years, sends them out in half grubby clothes every other day, and generally doesn’t have time to do all the things for them that my mother did for me growing up — I finally feel like I am absolutely nailing something in their life.

And that something is THE most important thing of all to nail: their education.

It’s been six weeks since we started Platform Education with our marvelous teacher Miss Bacon and Ethan and Ollie are absolutely thriving. We have found a perfect teacher for the boys in Miss Bacon. She has over 12 years experience as a primary school teacher, is fantastic at creating boundaries and structure that make Ethan feel comfortable with plenty of autonomy and personal choice to allow Ollie to feel like the day is a bit more free flowing.

Its really amazing to see how Miss Bacon is adapting to the opportunity Platform Education provides her — changing her mindset around what a day looks like without bells and schedules to adhere to. The class have been on lots of outings into the community whether it’s to do their reading and writing in the local cafe where they can people watch or into the library to replenish the stock of books in our little classroom.

I think one of the strongest words that come to mind is FREEDOM. The kids are free to do their work on a couch, at a table, or outside in the sunshine. They recently chose to study World War Two as their inquiry topic and for the art and design aspect they have been making Spitfire aeroplanes. When it came to painting day — seeing how much time, care and attention the kids were spending on their painting Miss Bacon just let the class continue on until they had finished their project. For over two hours they all sat outside carefully finishing every last detail. I think back to what would have happened in a school environment — the bell would have rung, it would be time for the next class and it’s pencils down. I love that the children were allowed to immerse themselves in the experience and subsequently have created something they are rightfully very proud of.

For me as a mum, I feel like I am giving the boys the education of a lifetime and I must say it makes me feel delighted that I am doing something that is absolutely right.
