While I cannot be in NYC Thursday evening (Jan. 26) enjoying Jazz at Lincoln Center’s “Celebrating Dizzy Gillespie” event, I sure as heck can catch the livestream.

Presented by Livestream.com, the live webcast (8:00 PM) will feature Vincent Gardner — JLCO trombonist, composer, arranger, and music director — leading the Orchestra in new and classic arrangements of Dizzy’s music, showcasing the thrilling melodies, hard swing, and kinetic solos that define these works.

Gardner also makes his highly anticipated return as a JLCO composer, debuting a new work that highlights the essential components of bebop and keeps true to its spirit by offering something fresh, distinct, and technically ambitious. On the occasion of Dizzy Gillespie’s centennial, audiences will experience the depth, energy, and creativity that this unparalleled genius and beloved figure continues to inspire.

Dizzy Gillespie was a visionary architect of bebop, a peerless trumpet virtuoso, and a gifted educator, dancer, and raconteur. Thursday night the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis digs deep into the musical world of Dizzy.

I’m a big fan of the Livestream platform, especially their ongoing collaboration with Jazz at Lincoln Center. Over 160,000 people a year enjoy performances from Wynton Marsalis, Cecile McLorin Salvant, Joey Alexander, and other wonderful artists.

But no need to be in the Big Apple.

Just tune in via laptop, mobile devices, or smart TV.

What better way to promote the power of jazz… and technology. Or, more specifically, the streaming technology that allows all this talent, all this joy to be appreciated and enjoyed all around the world.
