Set for September 5 and 6, 2024, in the heart of Berlin, NEW VISIONS for Music & Sound is a dynamic conference where new visions for the evolution of the music ecosystem and emerging sound technologies take center stage.

Organized by MUSIC TECH GERMANY and WISE, the event will bring together some of the most visionary minds from the music sector.

The line-up of speakers is impressive. The speakers consist of some of the most forward-thinking artists, polymaths, entrepreneurs, technology experts, researchers, and seasoned industry professionals who come together to present and discuss creative solutions for the future music ecosystem.

Look for people like the inventor of the mp3 format Karlheinz Brandenburg (Brandenburg Labs), Rachel Lyske (DAACI), Willy Ehmann (BeadBread), Georgia Tagliette (The ICNAC) and many more artists, founders, music researchers and tech enthusiasts.

NEW VISIONS For Music & Sound takes place at the historical Pfefferberg Areal. It used to be the oldest brewery in today’s Prenzlauer Berg district in Berlin.

Attendees will enjoy engaging lectures, discussions, and presentations on topics including new funding opportunities for artists, the potential of Spatial Audio as the future music format, the latest trends in music marketing, and much more.

A special focus will be placed on the much-debated impacts of AI on the creative process of musicians, and the myriad ways the music industry can ethically benefit from this technology.

Additionally, 25 startups will present their solutions to various challenges within the music industry.

What makes NEW VISIONS different from other music conferences is that the focus is not so much on the challenges and problems that the music industry is currently facing, but but rather on the opportunities created by innovators and creative minds to further develop the music ecosystem in the best possible way for everyone involved in the industry.

As we get closer to the opening of the conference, we caught up with Matthias Strobel, President MusicTech German, and Philipp Grefer, Founder and CEO of WISE — The Future Festival and Think Tank, to get an update on the show and what we can expect.

1. What was the spark that led MUSIC TECH GERMANY and WISE to come together to create this exciting, new event?

One major goal of MusicTech Germany is to foster innovation that can help to solve challenges that musicians and the music industry are facing.

We believe that the future music ecosystem can be created together and we contribute to this vision by connecting people from different disciplines, by initiating conversations with pioneers and experts in relevant areas and by providing platforms for knowledge transfer between the music and tech sectors.

We have been running the Berlin Music Tech Meetups for the last six years. This community grew from 60 people at the first meetup in 2018 to 2.500 music tech enthusiasts in Berlin.

It was time now to try scaling this up and also invite people from abroad. Since it started in 2018, WISE has been organizing larger conferences and events at the intersection of music, art, science, and technology around the world.

From its inception at UCCA, a major institution for contemporary art in Beijing, to SXSW, Art Basel Miami, Hamburg (in collaboration with Reeperbahn Festival), Shanghai, Chengdu, and for the past four years in Berlin, WISE has been at the forefront of connecting creative and tech communities globally — curating more than 500 speakers and 100 artists, and reaching more than 20,000 dedicated followers worldwide.

So we shared similar goals in fostering innovation and creating solutions as well as concepts for the future of the creative industries, research, music and other very connected disciplines.

That’s why we decided to unite both of our networks and communities to join forces for NEW VISIONS.

2. Give us an overview of what participants can expect over the two days in Berlin at the show.

NEW VISIONS is going to be a different kind of music conference. Instead of discussing the status quo of the music industry like other music conferences do, we focus on solutions for the future music ecosystem.

We have invited visionary people with ideas and solutions for music and its industry to evolve in the best possible way for everyone involved.

Attendees can expect to get insights on a variety of topics by watching keynotes, panels and conversations with some of the best experts in their fields.

This event is meant to be a platform for artists, music industry pros, researchers, entrepreneurs, and people from vertical industries to connect, learn, and be inspired.

Attendees should get ready to:

… explore new creative and economic opportunities

… discover new tools, platforms, and strategies

… learn about the potential to extend the music value chain into vertical industries

… gain knowledge about application fields of emerging technologies for music

3. Music innovation is happening lightning fast. NEW VISIONS is shaping up to be a perfect event for attendees to get a close-up look at the technologies sweeping across the music industry. What are some program highlights that will spotlight the creativity that’s helping the future of music and its industry.

Our program is a mix of topics that focus on the music industry and sessions that delve into new creative opportunities.

It’s hard to pick a highlight as all sessions have been thoughtfully curated and will bring value to each attendee in some way or the other.

Most relevant for people working in the music industry are probably the sessions about New Visions For Music Metadata, Publishing, Music Monitoring, Music Marketing, while the creative folks will probably get the most out of New Visions For Spatial Audio, Quantum Computing, Artist Investment or how to get their music in games.

4. AI is the big thing lately — here and there, and everywhere. Can we assume AI will be a big focus of the NEW VISIONS event?

Not everywhere but yes, we will look at application fields of AI for music from different perspectives and we are thrilled that some of the world’s leading experts and pioneers will join us for those sessions.

The panelists for “New Visions for Generative AI” consist of CJ Carr (Stable Audio/HarmonAI), Ilya Tolchenov (Delphos Music), Rachel Lyske (DAACI) and SENAIDA, an stunning interdisciplinary artist. All of them have years of experience researching Generative AI and integrating it into their creative processes.

This session will explore how artists and labels can leverage this transformative technology to their advantage

Martin Clancy, founder and mastermind of the groundbreaking initiative AI:OK will highlight current challenges and opportunities of Generative A. In his keynote, he will explore how we reached this pivotal point and provide practical solutions for integrating AI into the creative process while maintaining artistic integrity and ensuring fair compensation

Another session will delve into how AI tools are expanding the creative toolbox and how they become an assistant in the songwriting and music production process.

This conversion between the outstanding multi-talented artists BISHI, the AI development genius behind Mercedes Sound Drive, Amirpasha Mobbing Tehrai and Landr’s Daniel Cole will be moderated by music tech expert and musician Terry Tyldesley aka Kat Five.

And then, there will also be a talk from Christian Mix-Linzer from one of the leading sync agencies tracks & fields which will explore the developments of machine learning and AI for music supervision and the creative industries as a whole.

He will highlight the implications on workflows and discuss solutions for the future.

And for sure, AI will also be part of the conversations in other sessions.
