Hocus Pocus

October ending isn’t an excuse not to watch any horror movies. In fact, it’s probably the most perfect time of the year. For one thing you’re not going to be extra scared after October 31st, watching horror films is as chill as walking in the park. And, you know what would be the perfect films to watch? ’90s witch films!

Witches movies are basically awesome. We all have our own ideas of what a witch looks like, how they act, and where you can find them. The ’90s were rife with witch films that range from all genres. If you prefer a funny witch, there’s a ’90s film for that; serious, animated, heroic, romantic and so on.

So grab a pen, ready that bowl of popcorn, and explore our list of our favourite ’90s witch films.

Casper Meets Wendy

Casper Meets Wendy

This is a direct-to-video film in 1998 based on the Harvey Comics character, Casper the Friendly the Ghost. It follows Wendy, the Good Little Witch, and her aunts looking for sanctuary because an evil warlock is out to find them. Then Wendy meets him who is on vacation with his uncles. Despite the warnings of their families, the two easily become good friends.

A good witch film with the family.

The Blair Witch Project

The Blair Witch Project

A found footage film released in 1999. It is the story of a group of students who went to a small town to investigate the legend of a local murderer. Their travels lead them to the woods where they lost their way, and, well, horrific things began happening to them.

Let me tell you, this is the reason why I kept my projects simple at University.

Practical Magic

Practical Magic

This romantic comedy is about Sally and Gillian Owens who are part of a magic family. They mostly avoided anything that has to do with witchcraft. But when Gillian’s boyfriend, Angelov, died unexpectedly, the Owens started working on learning hard magic. With a policeman in tow and suspicions arising, they both work hard to resurrect Angelov, until something went wrong.

Not you usual romantic comedy, eh?

The Crucible

The Crucible

It’s a film adapted from Arthur Miller’s play of the same title. The Crucible is inspired by the Salem Witch Trials. Everything you read about the witch hunts come to life on the screen. The story started with village girls who were caught doing a ritual by the village Reverend. What follows is their trials and how their families, and the village itself, reacted to the situation.

You probably need to brace yourselves from the gruesome, but this is definitely an interesting take on the Salem trials.

Hocus Pocus

Hocus Pocus

And who could forget the famous Disney movie, Hocus Pocus. When a group of teenagers accidentally released a coven of evil witches who used to live in an abandoned house. Now they must work together to steal their book of spells to stop them from becoming immortal.

Have any of these films caught your attention? Well, what are you waiting for, get watching!
