This is a lovely, simple activity for kids (and grown ups). You start with a blank sheet of paper and fold it in half along the short side. You can fold the paper back on both sides to form a M as shown in this video.

Then draw something across the ‘closed’ surface. It could be a face, and emoji, a plant, animal, planet, building — anything really.

Then open the sheet of paper out. On the ‘inside’ draw what could be the on the inside of what you drew on the ‘outside’. The possibilities are endless, and there’s huge potential for surprise and delight in that creative tension between inside and outside.

A wrinkle on this is to draw as a group and swap when everyone has drawn an outside. Everyone then draws an inside to the one they have been given. This may spark more creativity and surprise because you get to react to someone else’s ideas, which is often easier and more fun that just working with your own.

Here are a few examples that my boy and the kids (including me) in the session made together (remotely).
