We were finally blessed with another Kingdom Hearts III trailer from Japan’s D23 expo, showing off more gameplay and confirming the Monsters Inc. world. We saw Sora and the gang meet Mike and Sully, what looked like a boss battle in Toy Story, we saw Flynn Rider and Rapunzel from Tangled, and Ariel from the little mermaid as a summon (hopefully this means we won’t have to go back under the sea). We also got the surprise of hearing some new music from the game, performed by singer Hikaru Utada.

We get some small story information when Vanitas and Marluxia pop up but nothing more than that. As for the game itself… my god. Kingdom Hearts III looks colorful, smooth, fast paced, and fun. Something to note is the drive gauge and health bars were active during the trailer, meaning this is no longer a “test stage” but real actual footage of someone playing the game. I wanted to point this out because Square still only has a release window of “2018” which is still a very broad window, but for this reason I don’t think we should fear the game delaying, I have a strong guess that the game will release somewhere between September and November.

It’s a long-awaited AAA title so the holiday release makes sense, but as popular as KH is, it’s much more of a cult following, and with major games like Red Dead Redemption 2 releasing this fall, I could see Square doing a September release to stay ahead of any competition. We’ve also seen the last few KH games drop late summer, so we can be hopeful that we’ll get it sooner rather than later.

I think we can be hopeful and excited for Kingdom Hearts III. There’s a lot of questions to still be answered and we just might get those answers at E3 this year.

You can check out the trailer below.
