Building a game studio for the 21st century
Big Time Studios is not your average gaming startup. It was built from the ground up to be a 21st century studio — combining the best ideas from top legacy game companies with the latest techniques from fast growing internet companies and fast thinking crypto startups. The result of this merger is a truly next generation team who aim to deliver a truly next-gen experience.
When we set off to create a new studio, we knew it needed to incorporate several ideas:
- A GLOBAL MINDSET — Global both in market reach and team composition. With Big Time, we aim to tell a story that’s universal in nature, with accessible gameplay that appeals to a wide audience. Who better to achieve this goal than a team that represents that same diversity? With artists and programmers working all over the world, our unique perspectives combine to guide a unified vision.
- A REMOTE WORKFORCE — Big Time was designed to be a fully remote workforce, even before the global pandemic introduced the concept of remote work to the rest of the world. We’ve never had an office and never intend to. Today’s technology allows us to run our company across three different continents 24/7 without additional costs. It also allows us to recruit the best and brightest, regardless of where they might be located.
- A FOUNDATIONAL APPROACH — The bigger a company gets, the easier it is to get lost in layers of management and process. Those aren’t the kinds of things that get us fired up to go to work each day. Getting back to the basics of game development — focusing on what made us fall in love with the genre in the first place — is central to how we think about game development. Big Time aims to remain lean and nimble — with the boldness to chase our passions and ambition to take big swings.
- VETERAN LEADERSHIP — The real key to any company’s success, be it remote or in-person, is people. We’ve recruited an all-star team of developers and challenged them with doing the best work of their careers. Empowering our leaders with the freedom to explore and make their voices heard has already paid dividends. And in the future, their example will help shape a new generation of leaders who will continue to create great entertainment experiences for years to come.
- HANDS-ON CRAFTSMEN — Here at Big Time, we’re big believers in “Show Don’t Tell.” Planning is important, but execution even more so. We prize devs who like to get their hands dirty. Who aren’t afraid to dive into the engine and make something from nothing. Don’t know how to do something? Ask around and figure it out! It’s a scrappy mindset that allows pretty much everyone the opportunity to get their best work on the screen. And it’s only made possible by a team who support each other in the singular goal of creating the best gameplay experience possible.
- A CULTURE OF GAMERS. You can fake many things in life, but never real passion. We believe the best work comes from people who love what they do. For this reason, it’s become crucial that all of our employees bring one crucial element to the table. A love of games. We make them, we play them. Weekly playtests are not only a way for the team to bond and check out the competition… they’re a reminder of what got us all into this industry in the first place: The simple love of play.
Building a winning team in this highly competitive market is no easy feat. It takes passion, dedication, organization, leadership, and talent. Here at Big Time, we feel we’ve assembled a team that checks these boxes… and then some. An international team of artists and programmers — diverse in personality and background — collaborating around the globe to deliver a new entertainment experience we hope you’ll never forget.
