Have you ever been swept up by a gust of fresh Icelandic air? That’s exactly what it feels like when you meet this person — a multimedia designer who is always busy breathing life into static designs and ideas. But there’s so much more to Þórey than her exemplary professional prowess. In a world of black and white, she not only adds color but splashes it around with joy, just like a Jackson Pollock painting.

I’m a little biased on this, but Þórey isn’t just lovely to work with. She’s a ray of sunshine that brightens up everyone’s day with her smile.

Hello Þórey! Can you briefly introduce yourself and your role?

Hi there! My name is Þórey, pronounced Tho-rey, I am a multimedia designer working in the marketing department at Directive Games. I am responsible for creating most of the graphic marketing materials that Directive Games needs, whether it is for our amazing games or the corporate side of the company. I work closely with my marketing producer, and I think we make a great team. A typical day might have me working on social media campaign graphics, a website layout, Meet the Team signage, or a presentation template for in-house use.

I have been creating graphics for over 13 years, both in in-house marketing/graphic departments and as a freelancer. While I really do enjoy both, I do enjoy working with a group of talented people, like here at Directive Games, more. I am constantly discovering new techniques and learning new fun tricks that make my projects more efficient and never dull. Before I became a multimedia designer, I studied to be an architectural drafter, also known as a draftsman; fun but a bit monotonous.

I like to say that I MIP everything that lands on my desk, MIP stands for Make-It-Pretty, and yes, to me, this is a technical term.

What’s your favorite part about being a Multimedia designer?

I love, love, love the fact that I get to work on a variety of projects, and that is probably the biggest reason why I love my profession. Some projects can be very challenging but in a fun way, and working on all kinds of projects for different mediums keeps everything fresh and exciting.

It’s your first time in both gaming and web3; what do you think about these industries?

I think they are both complicated and interesting. I love our games, the visuals are bright and beautiful, but Web3 is still a little beyond my understanding, but I am eager to learn, and I think it will take some time to fully understand it, but that’s ok. Luckily we have a team of brilliant people who think web3 is as easy to understand as I find making beautiful graphics. ;)

We know you have many hobbies outside of graphic design, including but not limited to cats, ocean swimming, and hot sauces! Tell us about them!

Wow! Ok, let’s go. Cats! I have two beautiful rescue cats; they are eight and seven years old, both mollies (girl cats). I absolutely love coming home after work and getting a head bump and a purring hug. I mean, who wouldn’t love that? They are funny and goofy but so sweet, and I think they make my home more homey.

Now, swimming in the cozy North Atlantic Ocean is something that will wake you up! The Icelandic ocean temperature is usually between 5°C and 10°C, but it can easily go below 0°C during winter and up to 16°C during summer, and I love it! There are so many health benefits that are now thought to be directly connected to cold water swimming or immersion. It is good for your cardiovascular system (but if there is a history of heart problems, it is better to check in with a doctor before trying it). It has been shown to boost your immune system, and if you are struggling with anxiety or mild depression, it can be a healthy way of increasing your dopamine levels and a good add-on to your mental health care. Nothing gives me a greater sense of peace than floating in the ocean, looking up at the sky, and practicing mindfulness. Absolute bliss.

From cold to hot. I love spicy food, so much so that my chef husband and I started making spicy Icelandic jams that we sell in stores here in Iceland. We also both love the Youtube show Hot Ones and regularly host a Hot Ones evening with good friends that, like us, love spicy food, and we all try the latest lineup of Hot Ones hot sauces together.

I also have a fondness for color tattoos, maximalist decor, and loud fabric prints, so maybe I just like everything better with lots and lots of bright colors and patterns.

Tell us your favorite Icelandic joke!

Not Icelandic but my favorite:
What does a dyslexic pirate say?
RRRRRRA!
