Welcome to the Wild West! Grab your shooting finger and get ready.

PlayDapp Gamers it’s time for another awesome Developer Diary, with Seungmo ‘Mangrove’ Choi! We’ve been working hard on our take on the arcade classic. We’ll be releasing more details with more developer updates, but right now let’s hand over to Seungmo ‘Mangrove’ Choi for the latest development.

Hello, It’s me Seungmo ‘Mangrove’ Choi. One of PlayDapp’s game developers, and currently PlayDapp’s Pinball expert! Our pinball project has a major update for you all! I can’t wait to share it with you. Last time I told you all about our inspirations, now it’s time to focus on the design and 3D modeling process!

Introducing Wild West Pinball!

The first pinball playfield is a wild one

Right after sketching the idea of pinball, I started to think about the look and that first impression that a pinball table gives you. When looking at pinball tables, I realized there were thousands of alternatives, from retro space style to movie tie-ins and anywhere in between! It was incredibly hard to pick just one theme.

However, thanks to my business trip to Osaka Japan earlier this year, I was able to decide on an image concept considering user preferences. (Details all about our time at the Silver Ball Planet flight in Shinsaibashi, Osaka, Japan, will be on the next Developer Diary.)

Concepts — From basic lines to a theme

From the first, simple blocks sketches to a full-color idea! Pinball is getting more and more complete.

The Wild West Pinball Playfield in all its glory

Ta-da! Wild West Pinball is an awesome concept, inspired by the legends of the USA’s Western Frontier. What do you think? An amazing look, right?

I’ve implemented all the themes and style of a good ol’ Western gunfight in the pinball field. Bringing this exotic idea to everyone via the familiarity of pinball

Doesn’t the pinball ball remind you of a bullet? It makes me feel like I’m watching a Western movie!

Development & modeling of 3D items

We worked steadily to model the stage and implement it in development.

These are the sketches of the pinball playfield’s objects. You might remember it from my last Diary. Of course, it’s a long way from sketches to fully implemented 3D items for Wild West Pinball.

I’ll show you how 3D modeling has been applied for various items from the sketch, ready to apply them in-game.

The first modeling used a lot of polygons. Polygons are the basic unit of 3D graphics. Multiple polygons in a polygon form a single character or 3D project.

Next, we made models for the game, we reduced the number of polygons in the first models we worked on to balance our desire for a great look and a great experience. We made them into a form that could be written easily in the game, and then we used them in the production.

You can see the results of this hard work. We’ve managed to create some very detailed and easily manageable assets to use in Wild West Pinball.

However, it doesn’t stop there. We have to apply the style and graphical design of Wild West Pinball. Appling some awesome graphics and style, we start to get a real look at how Wild West Pinball will feel for players. After 3D modeling and texture mapping, the whole playfield comes alive.

Wrapping up until next time!

Today we unveiled the Wild West Pinball design and 3D modeling work. We’ve been working on this steadily, getting more accurate with our vision for a truly exciting playfield.

What do you think? Can you see yourself on the plains having a shootout in the world of Wild West Pinball?

I hope that you’re getting excited about the world of pinball brought to you by PlayDapp. And I hope your expectations for pinball games will grow with each production story released to you throughout my developer diaries.

As I promised, I’ll be back soon to share all the awesome experiences when I researched Pinball machines in Osaka. Inspiring one of PlayDapp’s latest gaming experiences.

Missed the start of these Developer Diary’s then catch up with the first one now.
