The Beginners Guide to Solo Performance

In March of this year, I was invited to participate in a show with the solo performance group, It’s Personal. For the show, I had to write and perform a 5-minute piece about a story from my own life. The theme was “gross,” and I could interpret that however I wanted.

I had seen one of their shows before, and had been incredibly impressed and moved by the vulnerability, humor, and honesty I had seen onstage. I jumped at the chance to work with It’s Personal, to be a part of something so special and unique. Plus, I knew it would give me the chance to strengthen my writing and performance skills. I was stoked.

The only problem was… I had never written a solo performance piece before.

I had no idea where to begin. I wrote down a handful of ideas in an old notebook, and waited and prayed for inspiration to hit.
