Benefits of Listening to Multicultural Music With Your Kids
Do you listen to music from different cultures in your home? Did you know there are a ton of benefits to exposing your child to multicultural music at a young age?
When children hear music from other cultures, it exposes them to new ideas and experiences outside their normal day-to-day. Exposing them to the sound, rhythm and intonation of different languages helps them to discriminate between sounds, which is an important component of language acquisition. Listening to the sounds of other languages encourages concentration and the practice of active listening. Plus, listening to music of another culture is a great way to experience the idea that we live in a diverse world with people of all sorts of backgrounds and values. Children focus on commonalities with others rather than differences — people everywhere in the world dance and sing and rhyme and have fun with music, just like they do.
Try checking out the world music section at your local library or search Youtube or Spotify for songs that you can listen to together.
