Entertain Your Baby by Beatboxing!
Get ready to work those mouth muscles as you entertain your little one with exciting new noises. This activity is ideal for 0 to 1-year-old’s, although kids and adults of all ages can enjoy this one! Place your baby comfortably so that he is facing you a couple feet away. Older toddlers can watch you while crawling, sitting or standing. Make funny new noises with your mouth. You can trill and click your tongue, blow your lips, whistle, hum, smooch, hiccup, anything you can imagine. If you have an older toddler, see if he can imitate the noises you are making. He may not be able to produce the sound, but you and he will probably get a kick out of trying. Watch for a reaction after you make each sound. Tune into your baby and see which sounds he likes and dislikes. See how he responds to changes in your volume. Babies as young as 3 months old will be very interested in watching you make noises with your mouth, and watching your face as it changes each time you make a different sound. As he gets older, your child be working on locating where a sound is coming from, so move around as you play this game and watch as he follows your sounds. When you make sounds and encourage eye contact with your child, you’re building his curiosity about language — he’s watching the way you move your mouth to produce words and sounds, and he’s working on imitating those motions to produce his own sounds and develop his own capacity for speaking. Who knew some silly beatboxing could actually be good for your child’s development?!
