Play doesn’t have to become a thing of the past when you become an adult. In addition to playing with your child, you can incorporate “play” into your life by developing new skills and focusing on new hobbies. Plan a new experience for yourself. Think about a new skill you’ve wanted to learn (like painting or playing an instrument), a new place nearby you’ve wanted to check out (a hiking trail or a new restaurant), or a new experience you’d like to have (like rock climbing or go-kart racing). Set aside some time to do this for yourself. You might need to find someone to watch your little one or you might want to talk some friends into joining you. If it’s a recurring activity, such as learning a skill, schedule time you can set aside each week to focus on it, even if it’s just 5 or 10 minutes once or twice a week. We spend so much time focusing on developing our children, we often forget to develop ourselves. It’s been shown that new and novel experiences actually promote brain health and can give us a dose of happiness.
