The Knicks almost ‘called it a year’ at their last game, so what’s next?
INDIANAPOLIS — Tragedy isn’t a new word the the New York Knicks or their fans. In fact, the last three losses that the Knicks had (to the Phoenix Suns, the Washington Wizards, and the Atlanta Hawks) were all decided on one possesion.
Luckily for the team’s morale, they did manage a win during their last game, Monday night against the Indiana Pacers. Thanks to Carmelo Anthony, the Knicks were able to break the tied game in the last 23 seconds, ending the game with a 109–103 win.
Yet despite the win, that game wasn’t much different from the others.
“We’ve been losing close games … we lose another one like that, guys probably would’ve quit, called it a year probably,” coach Jeff Hornacek said after the game according to the Daily News.
Giving up their huge lead in the fourth quarter, not to mention the turnovers and missed lay-ups, the Knicks still have a lot of figuring out to do if they want to continue their road to the playoffs.
“I don’t even want to think about if this one got away,” Anthony said. “Thinking positive right now.”
The team currently stands at 20–26 with that win being just the fourth in the past 17 games. But there is hope still. They are currently in 11th place in the Eastern Conference and only 2.5 games behind eigth place — which is currently being held by the Chicago Bulls.
Wednesday night, they play the Dallas Mavericks (15–29), who they defeated in their last encounter with a 93–77 win at home. But it won’t be as easy as it was last time, as this time they will be facing a healthy Mavericks team with Dirk Nowitzki back on the court.
And both teams desperately need a win. The Knicks could use one after losing seven of their last 10 games and the Mavericks are also fighting for a win after splitting thier last 18 games.
Yet, if these teams fighitng for a playoff spot isn’t enough to to look forward to, then Knicks fans should be delighted that Kristaps Porzingis will finally be able to face off with Nowitzki for the first time this season. Nowitzki is one of the players that the budding star has been frequently compared to.
