Maria Teriaeva: “How to transform voltage into music”
Maria, author of dream-pop shoegaze project «Dub i prosto derevo», ex-guitarist of band «Naadia» and participant of Red Bull Music Academy told us about role of technology in her life and creative process. Maria is about to release her solo album of experimental electronics and we glad to present a video “Merinos”, composition recorded mostly using Buchla synthesiser.
How do you imagine the future of the material world? Will it be interactive?
Interactive material world — it’s a present time. After Black Mirror serial it’s hard to imagine my own scenarios. I have a feeling that technical progress is so fast, that it’s more important to cultivate a new culture of using this interactivity. But not just make the world more interactive.
What have you learned about music education?
I don’t have professional music education. I went to music studio in school, then play a lot in music bands. Sometimes i think if i studied more some process would have gone much faster. As well when i go to classic music performances — i can’t understand how to write music for 50 musicians. Its pure magic!
Now i am in to modular synthesizers, and certainly, technical side of the process is essential, but besides same musical principles, as with any other musical instrument. My lack of professional education compensates with my practical experience.
Which skills will be in demand in the future?
Speed is the main skill of the future.
How do you imagine the future of tech industry with all these new tools that makes music production easier?
If it’s a new app on iPad then it is just another possibility.
But if it’s like a modular system where a man is controlling smart machine, then it does make music production easier, but from the other hand you need more knowledge, in physics at minimum. How to transform voltage into music. I think that’s the future
