Why is Marvel successful?
Marvel is one of the most successful movies franchise to date. Now I want to know why? Is it because of the iconic heroes and villains from the comic books or is it because of the production value and techniques put into them? I have looked at revenue from opening weekend and the gross total.
Let’s start by looking at the budgets for the films. We see that Infinity War has the highest budget by far and then there is Deadpool who has the lowest budget. Now just because there is a far difference between the top and bottom that doesn’t mean 58 million dollars is a small sum of money. But what was so much more spent on Infinity War compared to Deadpool. It could have been the large cast and the actor costs? And that’s close to what I believe, and I believe that its because there were so many iconic heroes that the studio knew they would make money on their investment. Unlike Deadpool who is only on character and has a personality that limits his fans and that limits his audience. So, in the aspect of budget I believe that the characters are what matter more.
Now let’s look at the revenue both gross and opening weekend. Starting with opening weekend we see Infinity War at the top and The Amazing Spiderman at the bottom. Now this is unlike Deadpool in the previous paragraph Spiderman is a family friendly hero who can be loved by all ages and is one of the most popular Marvel heroes. The problem here may be that this was the original Spiderman series and the actor for Spiderman was Toby Maguire and fans were unsure of how he would fit the roll. It had to be somewhat decent to still be in the top 20 marvel movies. Moving on to gross income we see Black Panther at the top of the list. The likely reason for this is the representation of an African American having the starring role as the hero. So, in this case again the reasoning for success is the popular character.
Another factor that could contribute to success is the availability of the movie. This is supported with Infinity War being show in the most theaters and having the highest opening weekend revenue. On the other hand, Black Panther is in the bottom 5 from the number of theaters show and has the highest gross revenue.
This is important because if all it takes to make a successful superhero movie is a popular character why bother putting effort into the production? Or if all that matters are that it looks pretty and is written well why not use a new superhero you won’t have to pay millions of dollars to use. As a film major in college this is important to me if to be successful, I only need one of these why bother spending money and time on the other. In conclusion the aspect that matters the most is the character or hero the film is portraying. This is show through The Amazing Spiderman movies and how most people dislike them, yet the original trilogy is still on the most successful list.
