Virginity is a concept that humans created. The belief that sexual experience means a loss of innocence gained popularity with the rise of misogyny in ancient Mesopotamia, and had a sinister second wind as monotheism became the global norm.

In truth, we loose innocence when we have been lied to, betrayed, or tricked. This can happen in a sexual experience, but sex is not a thief of innocence.

Anyway — this was not what I was thinking about when the YouTube gods started playing Ana Beauty’s virginity story…and obviously, I decided to watch it. I mean, what else is a sex scholar to do on a cold, winter night?

Why these “Virginity Stories” give me hope

Virginity started as an idea. Then, it became weaponized to discipline social and sexual behavior. This hierarchy of purity creates shame hangovers so powerful, we police ourselves as a form of protection.

If YouTubers are proving anything, it’s that the globe is ready to push past these taboos. There is voyeuristic relief in watching content creators laugh at themselves and be vulnerable. Personally, it gives me hope because the best way to…
