Hi There! Please give us a quick introduction of yourself. What are your mission/goals in game development?
I am a software developer who has always loved to play and make games. When I am making a game, I always want to make a game that I would love to play. Now that I can share my games with others, I hope that they will have as much fun playing them as I do!
What’s a fun fact that others may not know about yourself?
I also love to play and watch hockey, cause I’m Canadian eh!
How did you get involved in developing indie games?
I have been making games since I was very young. Still I am very new to the whole “Indie” scene. It just so happens that this time I wanted to try to get a little more serious with a game I was making. It also happened that I met an amazing pixel artist and once she decided to work on Rodent Warriors with me, I knew it would be epic!
What do you do when you’re not developing indie games?
Work, watch hockey, meditate, go for walks, play hockey, listen to music, cook, eat, do yoga, watch movies. And more…
Let’s talk about Rodent Warriors now. This lovable 2D RPG game has a very unique backstory and features awesome scrolling backgrounds and power bonuses galore! How did you come up with the concept for this game?
The concept of Rodent Warriors is something I have been thinking about for a while now. It’s my version of a mix between idle (clicker) games, and an RPG. I wanted to focus on the idea of progression, but still give the player a little action. Like I said I always want to make games that I would personally love to play. In this game I wanted to stuff in as many of the things that I have loved about the games that I have played into one game, while also adding my own ideas. It’s still a work in progress to be honest, but hopefully I can find a way to make all the elements work together.
What was the biggest challenge you encountered in building Rodent Warriors?
The biggest challenge has been in writing the music. I studied music in University but that was a long time ago and I haven’t been very involved in music for a while now, other than listening of course!
How does your team keep morale up during challenging game dev stretches?
Well we have a very small team… there are only two of us. So it’s easy for us to cheer each other up when we are not feeling very motivated. I personally haven’t had many moments of low morale because I am too focused on how awesome the final product is going to be.
What lessons have you learned through the stages of development of Rodent Warriors?
I’m always learning I think just like everyone else. One of the things I’ve learned is to have a vision and to just go for it. I’m also learning a lot about social media, and how fun it can be to interact with others via those channels. Even though I love making and playing games, I’m enjoying the interaction with everyone just as much or more than the game development.
What feature did you develop for Rodent Warriors that caused you to step outside your comfort zone?
Right now I’m working on interactive dialogues that will tell the story of the game. Writing is hard!
