Life at Plotly: People & Culture Blog #22

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to work at Plotly?

In this blog series, we will provide insight into the daily experiences of working at Plotly. We have interviewed team members from various departments, including Engineering, Customer Success and Solutions, Sales, and Professional Services, to give a comprehensive view of Plotly.

Why did you choose to work at Plotly? What made us stand out?

When I was living in Colombia, one of my first jobs involved creating a dashboard using Dash. For me, working at Plotly felt like a natural progression after I moved to Canada. I checked Plotly’s website, saw the opportunity, and immediately felt like I fit the role. When I got the job, I couldn’t believe it. It was incredible to pass from being a Plotly user to working for Plotly.

What three words describe your Plotly experience?

Enriching, friendly, and growth — whether it’s in experience, knowledge, or friendships, I’ve learned so much about a variety of tools and made meaningful connections along the way.

In a few sentences, what do you do at Plotly?

I help people with their coding problems. My role involves finding solutions to customer questions, testing those solutions from my side, and replicating the issues customers face to understand and resolve them fully. I love problem-solving, and this role allows me to do just that every day.

What’s your favorite work-from-home snack or beverage?

Coffee! I recently got an espresso machine, and I’m constantly making espressos. It’s a cool addition to my routine.

If you were to describe Plotly as a color or a flavor, what would it be and why?

  • Color: Purple — it’s tied to our branding and designs, much like how McDonald’s is associated with red and yellow. For me, purple feels distinctly Plotly.
  • Flavor: Dark chocolate — it’s complex but has nice, rich notes. Being from Venezuela, where chocolate is a big deal, this resonates with me.

What’s the best piece of feedback you’ve received during your time at Plotly?

When I joined Plotly as a junior, I was eager to grow and learn. Over time, my manager, Michael Babyn, Solutions Manager, Customer Success & Solutions, has expressed how pleased he is with my growth, particularly in becoming more technical. That feedback meant a lot to me — it’s incredibly motivating to know that my efforts are recognized. I also really value when customers feel like their problems become my problems. Solving their challenges is a big part of what drives me and keeps me passionate about what I do.

What skill or expertise are you most proud of developing while at Plotly?

I’ve become skilled at analyzing errors. It’s such a critical ability for any developer. When you first start coding, everything works fine — until it doesn’t. Learning how to read logs, interpret errors, and systematically solve problems has been a valuable growth area for me.

What are your proudest accomplishments so far during your time at Plotly?

I’m proud of my ability to take on challenges even when I don’t have all the answers right away. I’ve realized I don’t need to be a genius — I just need to believe in my ability to figure things out. If I don’t know something, I trust myself to gather the information and solve it.

What is your favorite part about working for Plotly?

The people. Everyone is friendly and open to helping. We have strong internal communication, which I really value.
