2019 was a BIG year for PLUG! But as the year draws to a close, it’s time to reflect on the incredible progress we’ve made.

We’re are building a technology platform that’s new to the world and there are a lot of unknown variables. Needless to say, I am immensely proud of how far our team of hardworking engineers, developers and architects have come.

At the beginning of the year we had to take a step back and look at the difficulties that were facing PLUG; the main drawbacks being around performance and safe sandboxing for smart contracts.

It took a few months, but we have rebuilt PLUG from the ground up using the fast, type safe rust language, on top of the Substrate framework. But, not only that, we’ve added some more powerful enhancements, and are a now a core contributor to Substrate.

Staying true to the PLUG vision, we built our own generic assets module, which provides the backbone of the multi-currency economy provided by PLUG. We built an attestation module, providing a simple way for identity claims and verification to be managed on-chain, and we rethought the blockchain permissions model from first principles. Now PLUG provides support for world first cryptographic proofs of delegation, Centrality’s patented technology, doughnut. Allowing users to authorise permissions on-chain between people or apps.

Next year PLUG will go 1.0! It’s all about stability and smart contracts. We’re building out pipelines and tooling to assess network stability, ready for a stable 1.0 release.

With the release of PLUG 1.0 the following tech will become available to our opensource community:

  • Doughnut permissioning will be available to smart contracts on PLUG
  • Users will be able to have safe, least-privilege interactions with smart contracts on PLUG
  • Multi currency support for smart contracts on PLUG
  • Contracts will be able to accept and transact in multiple currencies on PLUG
  • Gas fees may be settled in multiple currencies

But that’s not all, we’ve got big things planned for 2020.

We have been developing a dex exchange called CENNZX to facilitate easy exchanges on our first network, CENNZnet. When we launch, you’ll be able to pay fees in any generic asset using the exchange CENNZX.

Finally, we are in the process of architecting and patenting the Generation 4 blockchain technology, so if 2019 was big, 2020 is going to be bigger! (Much bigger).

The most important thing for PLUG is that we get lots of networks to join together with PLUGnet. These networks need to be high quality with lots of users and good use cases. The awesome news is we have at least ten PLUG based networks already underway with CENNZnet leading the charge, CENNZnet is the fastest growing user base in the world. Look out for more announcements next year about the new networks joining PLUG.

I hope you have had a wonderful year and enjoyed seeing PLUG progress each month. As always, I thank you for your ongoing support and wish you a very Merry Christmas.

See you next year!
